New Marine graduate visits White City Elementary

Marine Private First Class Austin Boatright, the brother of a student in Lois Peith’s second grade class, visited  White City Elementary recently. Private Boatright just graduated from Parris Island and spoke to the students about the importance of being respectful and responsible. In order to graduate, Private Boatright was required to do many things including shine his belt buckle and boots, iron his clothes, and make the bed. Students were inspired by the commitment and dedication of this leader and role model. New Leaders Named for Two K-8 Schools

ST. LUCIE COUNTY: St. Lucie Public Schools Superintendent E. Wayne Gent announced that Kim Jay, a recognized literacy leader in the school district, will serve as Allapattah Flats’ new principal, and Eldrique Gardner will bring his expertise in educational leadership to the campus of St. Lucie West K-8 as its new principal. Gent expressed, “Mrs. Jay and Mr. Gardner have a strong commitment to student achievement and deep knowledge of positive instructional practices that will support the continued positive growth at these school sites. New Cobras Building Foundations at FPC

Cobra Nation had another great week, especially in the 9th grade. Students had the opportunity to receive valuable information from IRSC’s Take Stock in Children on scholarship opportunities awarded to freshmen as they meet qualifications. Also, we wrapped up the topic “Building a Rapport with Teachers.” Ms. Brown’s students asked thoughtful questions to our amazing guests, who were able to provide valuable input, experience, and feedback. New 21st Century Program at Lakewood Park

Fifth grade students at Lakewood Park Elementary are getting a boost to learning as they are participating in the 21st Century after school tutorial program.  Students are engaged in project based learning with an emphasis on grade level expectations that will help them succeed academically.  This program runs Monday through Friday from 3:15 to 5:15.     

Neha Reddy presented in international science fair

Neha Reddy, a sophomore at Lincoln Park Academy, was one of 1,549 high school students from 68 countries, regions, and territories to display their independent research and compete for over $3 million in awards at the recent  International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in Pittsburgh, PA.  Her project was titled  ” Influence of Genetic Variation of Brazilian  Peppertree  Schinus terebinthifolius on the Survival of a Biological Control Agent Pseudophilothrips ichinianden. The Intel ISEF is the premier global science competition for students in grades 9–12. Congratulations to Neha for representing Lincoln Park Academy and St. Lucie Public Schools in this prestigious competition.

NEED Project Selects Morningside Elementary as Florida School of the Year

The National Energy Education Development (NEED) project congratulated Morningside Elementary for an outstanding energy education project and selected our school as the Florida School of the Year. The mission of the NEED project is to promote an energy conscious and educated society by creating networks of students, teachers, educators, and business, government, and community leaders to design and deliver objective, multi-sided energy education programs. Fifth graders completed a project that included learning and teaching others about the science of energy. Students hosted an energy expo at the Earth Day festival at the Oxbow center last weekend.

NEED Awards

Students from Morningside Elementary traveled to Washington, DC for the NEED Youth Awards conference and were awarded the 2019 Elementary School of the Year at the State level and a 2019 National Finalist Award. Their project was focused on the theme of Kids Teaching Kids About Energy. While at the conference, the students enjoyed meeting students from other states, touring DC, and cruising down the Potomac River. Navigator Transition Award

For the last two years, St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) and the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) have worked collaboratively to create a community work experience for students with disabilities.  Martha Taylor, Job Coach for ESE, and Mr. Douglas Baber, Human Resources Manager for St. Lucie County Board of Commissioners, along with the support of Mr. Howard Tipton and Ms. Frannie Hutchinson paved the way for the “Coffee Perks” program. NATIONAL YOUNG READERS WEEK (11/5 – 11/9)

Since 1989, National Young Readers Week has been an annual event held during the second week of November to raise awareness around the importance of reading. The event was co-founded by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.
