Weatherbee’s Peer Leadership Luncheon

For 36 male students at Weatherbee Elementary, It was an exciting lunch. Indeed, Commissioner Kim Johnson was the guest of honor at the Peer Leadership Luncheon. This luncheon is special program targeting African American male students with low reading proficiency or social/emotional challenges. Every month, these students get together for lunch as they are being motivated by successful African American males from the community. Weatherbee’s Dads Take Your Child to School Day!

Weatherbee Elementary invited fathers and male caregivers to come back to school! On September 30, fathers and male caregivers were encouraged to take their child to school, sign a pledge of involvement, and demonstrate the value of being involved in their child’s education.  It was a BANNER DAY at Weatherbee!  Pictured are Jahson Nelson and his grandfather.

Weatherbee’s April Peer Leadership

Weatherbee’s 5th Grade is Over the Moon

Mrs. Maxwell’s 5th grade science class at Weatherbee Elementary tackled moon phases this week.  The students got hands-on to learn about moon phases, using models they created out of Oreos.  They represented each phase of the moon as they discussed the transitions as well as the Earth’s movement, including rotation and revolution.  From 1st quarter moon, to waxing and waning crescent moons, the student’s understood how the moon and sun’s positions affect us all. Weatherbee’s 3rd Graders Tackle Math

Third-grade students in Mrs. Martinez’s math class from Weatherbee Elementary had math leap out of the pages of their book to centers posted up around the classroom.  Students are working on Unit Two in math, which focuses on attributes of two-dimensional figures, including points, lines, and quadrilaterals, and understanding the concepts of area and perimeter.  The students enjoyed taking math around the room as they moved from station to station, making area and perimeter come to life, often with real-world problems.  Students also enjoyed working in collaborative groups with their peers to figure out these problems and support each other. … Read More

Weatherbee Wins 3rd Place at SLC Fair

Weatherbee Elementary placed 3rd in the St. Lucie County Fair’s Education Display. Way to go Mariners! Thanks to Ms. Katelyn Donovan for planning our fair booth and to our Weatherbee students for their awesome art work!

Weatherbee VPK Field Trip

On April 27th, Weatherbee’s VPK classes were able to go on one of three field trips to the Children’s Museum in Jensen Beach.  It was a wonderful experience for our students to be able to share and learn with other children.  They were able to dress up and look towards what future might await them.  We had some doctor’s, nurses, fire-fighters, mechanics and grocery store clerks, we also had artists, architects and many other community little helpers present.  We are a Kids at hope school so the trip only reinforced many of the conversations that we have daily with our … Read More

Weatherbee Tracks Fluency with Turkey Trot

                      Students at Weatherbee are tracking their fluency in reading and math in a Turkey Trot. Every week children earn a feather to decorate when they meet their goal for each subject. At the end of the challenge, there will be an obstacle course to celebrate!                                    

Weatherbee Teacher Recognized For Service To Our Country Following 9/11

Saint Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara and Chief Hester stopped by Weatherbee Elementary School on October 12th to present Mrs. Lynnea Lockwood with a laminated copy of a recent newspaper article highlighting her service to our country in the days following 9/11. Mrs. Lockwood was a Communications Specialist in the Army and retired as a Sergeant after spending four years in Iraq. She now teaches Exceptional Student Education at Weatherbee.

Weatherbee Summer Reading Program

This summer Weatherbee encouraged their students to read a variety of books.  The school was open to take quizzes on their books and they were required to complete a summer reading packet.  Students who returned their packets were treated to a pizza luncheon in the Media Center.  Three of our students appear here;  Zamorah Owens, Casey Chilton, and Melissa Francois.

Weatherbee Students Learn About Empathy

First graders at Weatherbee completed a wrinkled heart activity to highlight the SEL (Social Emotional Learning) theme for October, empathy. While listening to a read-aloud, students wrinkled their heart to see the impact it had each time a negative word or action occurred. The class discussed the importance of thinking before speaking and word choice to preserve their hearts and the hearts of others.

Weatherbee Students Create Highwaymen Inspired Paintings

Fifth grade students celebrated Black History Month by painting in the style of the famous Florida Highwaymen. Select paintings will be displayed at the 6th Annual Highwaymen Heritage Festival in Fort Pierce at a later date. Our students enjoyed learning about local artists and their impact on our city!

Weatherbee Students Complete “Too Good For Violence” Program

Recently, Angela Thomas, Prevention Specialist with New Horizons of the Treasure Coast, provided a 7-week Too Good For Violence program for Weatherbee Elementary 1st and 2nd-grade students.  They learned how to be responsible in keeping the classroom peaceful, how to manage their emotions, and practiced their conflict resolution skills.  Ms. Thomas is pictured here with some of her 1st and 2nd-grade students.  

Weatherbee Student Places First In 2016 MLK Youth Essay and Oratorical Contest

Gracie Morris, 5th grade student at Weatherbee Elementary School, recently placed first in the 2016 MLK Youth Essay and Oratorical Contest, “Dream Forward: Choose Peace, Equality, and Change.” Shown in the photo with Gracie and her parents are Weatherbee teachers Mrs. Guermithe Ogé and Dr. Jennifer Nelson, Assistant Principal Jen Avellino, and Principal Mike Hitsman.

Weatherbee Student Led Conferences

On October 23rd and 24th parents and other caring adults were given the opportunity to listen to their student express their academic and behavioral goals and give encouragement as they learn to monitor their own progress and feel  a sense of accomplishment.  We thank all parents and caring adults for their participation and support!  While Asst. Principal Jennifer Avellino looks on Coast Guard Representative, Gary Bowerman and first grade student, Damion Chavez discuss his goals.
