Northport Students Evaluate Scientific Data Using Science Detective Skills

Northport is pleased to present our 2015-2016 middle grades Science Fair in the school media center. The Science Fair, under the direction of Dr. Laura Woodworth and a cadre of science instructors, are offering students an opportunity to stimulate out of the box problem solving. Students are encouraged and guided through the use of STEaM processes. Students moved about the media center reviewing projects and using check sheets to ensure that displays presented required data and followed correct procedures. Northport students enrich community connections

Northport K-8 students from all grade levels participated in a district wide initiative called “Movers For The Military” just in time for Thanksgiving! Students and their parents collected nine moving boxes filled with new items for the kitchen and bathroom, blankets, new pillows, new sheets, clothing, personal care items and even a brand new prosthetic leg to fit a homeless veteran. Northport K-8 School students are enjoying the Fall Book Fair immensely this year! Students, as well as parents and grandparents, are offered the opportunity to shop and make selections together at the media center supported fair. The book fair was open in the evening recently to accommodate families during the third grade parent night and will also be open to community members to congregate and shop for a balanced literacy plan for their children during the Title 1 Family Science Night. Northport students experienced a wonderful and festive time at the annual Port Saint Lucie Rotary Club Christmas party. Students were treated to lunch from the Olive Garden, met Santa Claus and received gifts. Thanks to Diane Crumpton and Tammy Boston for escorting our students.

Northport students enjoy annual re-enactment

Northport K-8 school’s entire fifth grade team as well as seventh and eighth grade students from three teams attended the 12th annual Raid on Ft. Pierce at the Savannas Recreation Area. Northport students have attended the re-enactment for 11 of the past 12 years. Students, under the direction of classroom teachers and Social Studies chair Bob Burdge witnessed first-hand the life of a soldier in the 1860s. Students learned about weaponry, outdoor cooking, clothing making and blacksmithing as well as a number of other Civil War memorabilia. It was thrilling for the students to experience a re-enactment of a primary source of information. Northport K-8 eighth grade students in Sandra Tyndale’s reading classes are enjoying a special section of books that are particularly chosen for seventh and eighth graders at the school.  Students can select from Young Adult Choices (YAC) books to tweak their reading enjoyment. The YAC books are being promoted in four schools in the district: Manatee Academy, Treasure Coast High School, Dan McCarty School and Northport K-8 School. Northport students engage on the topic of patriotism

Northport K-8 students spent an hour in the media center learning hands on lessons about our American flag and what the many folds symbolize. Students in Mala Woessner and Mary Ellsworth’s eighth grade classes as well as Amanda Sartain’s sixth grade classes participated in flag folding lessons instructed by the honor guard of the Port St. Lucie High School JROTC Jaguar Batallion. Also present was Rita Woodburn, representative of the Women’s Auxillary of the local American Legion Post 318.  Students participated in an essay writing lesson titled, “What Freedom Do I Enjoy the Most?” Every students was engaged in the lesson and each … Read More

Northport Students Engage in Idioms Opportunity!

Third grade Rising Star instructor, Lorena Wilson, and her students had a wonderful time celebrating Amelia Bedelia and Her Idioms Day recently. Students and teacher used the lesson as an extension of a study on figurative language. Mrs. Wilson dressed as Amelia Bedelia and students dressed as the literal meaning of idioms that they learned about in class. Students then invited other classes to come into the room and play “Guess the Idiom” game. Northport students electrified by powerful lesson

Northport K-8 middle grades students were electrified, enthused and inspired to learn more about the Korean War recently. Northport students paid tribute to the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Korean War Armistice by an integration of interactive learning, an informative and moving PowerPoint presentatioin, guest speaker Peter Popolizio, current Commander of local chapter 106 of the Korean War Veterans Association as a primary source, and were also treated to renditions of music of the time period by Northport choral students under the direction of James Kirk. Northport Students Delve into Ancient Egyptian Studies

Northport K-8 Students in Tracey Healy’s fifth grade class were so excited to participate in a Mystery Literature Unit as an end of the school year promotion of an intriguing lesson. Students read the mystery book, The Power of the Scarab, the story of an Egyptologist and his daughter who uncover a mystery while working an Archeological dig. During the unit, students read a case summary, used an evidence organizer and built background knowledge of ancient Egypt to make those all important connections to the mystery. Northport students deepen Holocaust knowledge

Northport K-8 fifth grade students in the classrooms of Judy Fowler, Charlotte Tombline, Tracey Healy, Nichole Robinson and Valerie Niewieroski deepened their knowledge and insight of the horrors of the Holocaust and scaffolded new information about World War II, Hitler and the Nazi Occupation by listening and interacting with speaker and Holocaust survivor, Peter Feigl, who was one of the children who was saved by the 5000 French villagers from Chambonne who assisted countless homeless children. Students were enthralled by the information and asked many questions including heartwrenching questions about the loss of Feigl’s family. Feigl recommended a book called “Weapons of … Read More

Northport students cultivate learning relationships

Northport K-8 students in Susan Matteson’s eighth grade reading class and young students in Lorri Lamm’s second grade class have been cultivating learning relationships to benefit each learning level and style. Students and teachers have been meeting twice a month since the beginning of the school year to bond and integrate learning systems. Students recently met to select words from second grade student lists, review the definitions and pronunciations and then to make costumes to portray the meaning of the words selected. Northport students compare and contrast two famous speeches

Northport K-8 Northstar students in Mala Woessners gifted and enriched middle grades classes used the tragedy of 9/11 to listen to two famous presidential speeches of hope, renewal and triumph over enemies of the United States. Students listened to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt address members of the U.S. Congress when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, and compared and contrasted the speech of President George Bush addressing the nation when Muslim extremists attacked the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001. Northport students combine powerful lesson on literacy and antibullying

Seventh and eighth grade students on the Northport K-8 Clownfish team combined a great lesson on literacy with a powerful antibullying message in the school Media Center recently. Students read the book “Call Me Yubbie” written by Joe Wojcik, better known as Joe The Biker in their reading classes. Each student then wrote an essay putting themselves in the shoes of one of the characters in the book. Northport students in Sandra Tyndale’s eighth grade class and Jennifer Lusardi’s second grade class collaborated with students from Fort Pierce Central High School and Lincoln Park Academy visiting Northport as Dual Enrollment students from Indian River State College. The dual enrollment students visited Northport as an assignment from their college level American Government class. Students, Samantha Huynh, Anthony Lima, Adriana Sanz and Nayeli Silva are running a mock campaign for Governor of the State of Florida. Northport students celebrated for excellence in math

Northport K-8 students were celebrated for Excellence in Education in math recently at a Mathlete Award ceremony.  Students were given certificates and special recognition at the program which celebrated their dedication and hard work this school year in math.  The third through fifth grade students won first place at the Northport K-8 Math Bowl competition and went on to represent Northport at the district first annual Math Bowl competition held at Fort Pierce Central High School.  The middle school students represented Northport at the regional MathCounts competition at Indian River State College in February.  Students are to be congratulated for … Read More

Just when we think our students couldn’t make us any prouder, our writers do their “Run for the Roses!” This morning, Kolbee Cicio, Allyson Sheets, Mercella Stephens, Sydnee Coryn, Emmanuel Serpas Funes, Emmalyne Lewiston and Ariana Aponte Quiles proved that Northport students love writing and they are very good at their craft. Northport Students Build Water Turbines!

Sixth grade students in Mr. Fess’ Northstars STEM class designed and built water turbines as part of their unit on Hydropower. These students are studying various types of alternative energy sources in this course while also learning about the Engineering, Science and Math necessary to harness the energy.
