During Bullying Prevention Month, the Cafeteria and Maintenance staff Leveled Up and showed their support for the “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully” initiative by showing how colorful friendship can be. The colors are a representation of how you can be surrounded by people who are different while realizing the value that each one brings to the pack. In their different roles of creating nutritious meals and providing a clean and safe environment, they help the students Level Up Learning, Level Up Success!    

Oak Hammock K8 presented a night filled with fun activities and shopping at the Annual Title 1 Parent Information Night. Parents were presented with information regarding the District’s Attendance Initiative and Parent Engagement as well as other important information. Following the presentation, families participated in a garden rejuvenation activity of stone decorating and then went shopping at the Book Fair. Families left feeling informed and certain that the students and staff at Oak Hammock K8 can Level up Learning, Level up Success.          

On Wednesday, September 7, parents and students attended a Title 1 Annual Parent Meeting at Oak Hammock K-8 School. Parents were informed of Title 1 policy requirements, standards and testing, parents and guardian rights, and the benefits of parent involvement. The Annual Title 1 Night was an opportunity to highlight the school’s theme of “Building Success Together with Positive Connections” to increase student and family engagement. Families were engaged in building LEGO friends together and enjoyed some refreshing Kona Ice to end the evening.

Congratulations to OHK8 students for winning at the County’s Regional STEM Fair. Micah Prakash, a 7th-grade student, won 2nd place in Intelligent Machines with “Pen vs Pixel. Lydia Bailey, an 8th-grade student won 2nd place in Environmental Science with “Recycled Paper.” The OHK8 family is extremely proud of their accomplishment. Students in Ms. Swies’s 4th-grade music class practiced Solfège, a singing exercise that especially uses the sol-fa syllables. They learned how to match pitches by echo singing and later adding hand symbols while singing sol, la, and mi pitches. The students were enthusiastic and extremely engaged in this activity. Student engagement is essential to an effective learning experience.                                                                   

Mrs. Harrison’s class practices life skills while learning how to properly prepare, prep, and clean up after cooking. They utilized their math skills to measure ingredients and learned how to use kitchen utensils to make Pizza!!! These skills are necessary for becoming self-sufficient adults. It was a great lesson to relate learning to real life and encourage critical thinking and problem-solving.        

At Oak Hammock K8 we are proud of our 6th through 8th grade STEM Fair winners & Regional STEM Fair qualifiers. We are so amazed at their creativity and the hard work our students put into their projects this year. Some of the winning projects are electricity produced by fruit, an automatic plant watering system, a cleaning robot, and Pen vs Pixel (AI). We are so incredibly proud of our students who Level Up Learning, Level Up Success!

Students from Oak Hammock K8 participated in Career and Technical Education (CTE) showcase with students from middle and high schools across St. Lucie Public Schools. The Showcase was all about Entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial mindset. The CTE classroom is a perfect place for teaching these skills, since CTE teachers already cover many lessons and projects in entrepreneurship. The categories were New Food truck concept, E-commerce, 3D Printing, Welding, Artistic creation, and Middle School Entrepreneurship. Oak Hammock k-8 participated in the middle school Entrepreneurship category. Students at Oak Hammock K8 School continue to Level up Learning, to Level up Success!  

Mr. Nygard is engaging and intriguing his 3rd-grade music students! They sing along as he plays his guitar during warmup exercises. Following the warmup, students learn about rhythm. Mr. Nygard uses a device called the Note Knack to create a rhythm using different colors and generate a steady beat for the students to interact with the music.  

 Mrs. Whitehead’s first-grade students have been learning about living things and life cycles. Life cycle is the series of changes in the life of an organism. They learned about the caterpillar turning into a butterfly. Over the course of a few days, they watched as the caterpillars spun into their cocoons and later turned into butterflies. Mrs. Peterson’s first-grade class learned all about Hispanic Heritage Month. In honor of Hispanic Heritage, their class created Repujado en Aluminio. Repujado is a Spanish language term for embossed aluminum. This is a metal embossing technique dating back to the 12th century. It’s also a very popular and beloved craft in Mexico. Students pressed down and embossed Aluminum foil, then used Sharpies to make their masterpieces colorful.                         

A Pep Rally was held at Oak Hammock to inspire enthusiasm in students as they prepare to take the PM2 assessment.  Students enjoyed a fun filled day as they listened attentively to the sounds of music from Centennial High School Jazz Band. They also enjoyed a basketball shootout as they cheered on their peers. It was a lively way to pep up the students and get them into testing mode. Sawyer Putnam, a 6th grade student at Oak Hammock K8 School competed at the St. Lucie District History Fair and won first place for his individual exhibit titled “The Completion of the Panama Canal”. He competed against 92 other students from various middle and high schools in St. Lucie County. Congratulations Sawyer! Continue to level up learning.

Ruby Isenhower, a second-grade student at Oak Hammock K8, won the Port St. Lucie “Name the Street Sweeper” contest. Ruby was one of many students who submitted a name. The name that she submitted was “Sweep Caroline”, based on the song Sweet Caroline that was written by Neil Diamond. City Council Members, along with Kona Ice, recognized Ruby by rewarding her whole class with a Kona Ice party at school. Students at OHK8 received a warm welcome as they arrived on campus. During the Tunnel of Hope event, students were greeted by police officers, sheriff deputies, fish and wildlife officers, firemen, school board members, school district safety team members, teachers, and staff. Students gave hi-fives, fist bumps, and smiles as they walked through the halls reading signs of encouragement and listening to motivational messages. Veterans at Oak Hammock K8 gathered and shared stories as they enjoyed a continental breakfast from Panera Bread to celebrate Veteran’s Day. Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor those who served honorably in the military. Students and staff Leveled Up Learning and provided Veterans with letters, tokens of appreciation, and accolades throughout the day. The administrators and the entire Osprey Family at OHK8 say “Thank you for your Service”. Happy Veterans Day!

The Oak Hammock 8th Grade Osprey Band participated in the Florida Bandmaster’s Association Concert Band Music Performance Assessment. The 8th-grade students worked diligently to learn and perform Mount Vernon, Little Brazil Suite, and Little Rondo for Band. They received straight superior ratings on stage and a superior in sight reading, receiving an overall superior.  

                                               Operation Osprey was founded in Jan. of 2014 by Mark Anthony Bozzo, a Cadet Col. at Treasure Coast High School JROTC. In this club, we work to instill the Air Force core values, as well as educate the select students in leadership, color guard, drill, and PT (physical training). Kindergarten students and their families enjoyed a night of fun-filled activities at the Kindergarten Family Engagement Night. They participated in activities that involved practicing Sight Words. Activities included: Sight Word Swat, Snowy Sight Word Scavenger Hunt, Mirror Sight Words, Ice Fishing Sight Words ,and Sight Word Snowball. The event was engaging and enjoyable to all who attended.
