What a fantastic Hispanic Heritage Month it’s been at Port St. Lucie High School!  This week we are wrapping up our campus-wide celebration, and it’s been incredible to see students and faculty sharing their vibrant cultures and heritage with the whole Jaguar community. Quality instruction initiatives earn state recognition

The Department of Quality Instruction of St. Lucie Public Schools was recognized at the October 9, 2012, St. Lucie County School Board meeting for being honored by the Florida Association of Staff Development for its implementation and facilitation of the St. Lucie County Framework. QR Crazy at Southport

Southport 8th grade students were engaged in a technology enhanced practice for their current unit, Systems of Equations. Students, together in groups, answered questions as a team, then when they came to a consensus for their answer, they took turns being the “runner.” The “runner” went to the answer zone in the hallway and found the correct QR code that matched the answer they chose. They scanned the QR code with their phones which, if they chose the right answer the QR code gave them the next question. The students really enjoyed the activity. Fort Pierce Central Culinary students and Health Science HOSA students partnered for a successful HOSA Fundraiser. Chef Jesse Strell and Mrs. Samantha Jackson combined forces to host a Spaghetti Fund Raiser where and HOSA students sold 115 dinners, and Central’s Culinary students prepared the meals. Go Cobras!

Puppets Come Alive at the Oxbow Summer Camp July 29 – August 2

The Oxbow Eco-Center will offer its premier Art of Puppetry Camp this summer for children ages 8 to 12, running July 29 through Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants will explore the many kinds of puppets with the help of professional puppeteers from around the state. Both IBEX Puppetry and Katie Adams’ Make Believe Theater will offer workshops on storytelling, the history of puppetry and puppet-making. Campers will build a variety of puppets, including giant dragonfly hand puppets, shadow puppets with moveable parts and sandhill crane marionettes. Pumpkin People decorated at Palm Pointe

Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition third graders have been studying character traits and how they affect the sequence of events in a story. The children decorated pumpkins to match the character in their story along with creating thinking maps and writing an essay. Pumpkin Patch – WCE

Students from White City Elementary in Mrs. Buescher’s kindergarten class were able to observe various types of pumpkins and gourds.  Miss Kitty read them a story and students were able to tell the events that happened in the correct order.  She then cut a pumpkin open and the students could explore the inside.  The students were able to understand the properties of matter and categorize the pumpkin using their five senses.  Each student brought a pumpkin home.  

Pumpkin Fun at F. K. Sweet

Kindergarten students in Melanie Francisco’s class enjoyed a unit on pumpkins.  The students charted their schema and used their five senses to investigate the physical attributes of a pumpkin.  After some awesome predictions of  what they thought might be inside the pumpkin, they opened it up to find squishy, gooey, strings, and seeds.  Julian Wright loved being the first one to check it out!

Pull Apart the Post-It

Frances K. Sweet 5th grade students were guided in a positive direction by rising senior Haniya Shareef of Lincoln Park Academy.  She conducted a motivational and career-oriented seminar for students by facilitating discussions about their potential career paths, presumed weaknesses, and identified strengths. Students were encouraged to recognize their weaknesses but refuse to accept them. Additionally, they were encouraged to emphasize and develop their strengths in order to utilize them as they explore and develop their potential career path. Public Defense Attorneys Support Leadership at Gaines Academy

The St. Lucie Public Defense Office is sponsoring a tie drive to support SGA’s Leadership Days. All middle school students participate in a Successful Scholar elective focusing on goal setting, organizational, study and communication skills needed for success in college and careers. Each Thursday, students are encouraged to wear “Professional Dress”. Seventy ties have been donated for our young men to wear. PTO Sponsored Spring Carnival a Success at SLWK8 School

St. Lucie West K-8 students, teachers, staff, and volunteers enjoyed a warm, breezy, spring day at the annual PTO sponsored Spring Carnival! Everyone enjoyed a variety of bounce houses, fun and competitive games, a petting zoo, train rides, a dunk tank, and delicious treats. All reveled in the camaraderie and friendships that have been built throughout the year before culminating with the end-of-the-year assessments. A BIG THANK YOU to SLWK 8’s PTO for planning such a memorable event for our Shark family.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to Northport PTO! Northport community has been blessed with a robust and dynamic Parent and Teacher organization. PTO recently honored teachers and staff with a beautifully orchestrated holiday luncheon. The ladies served teachers and staff a lovely chicken parmesan dinner that included ziti, salad, rolls, and desserts catered by Big Apple Pizza. PTO holiday food baskets prepared at Southport Middle School

Southport’s PTO Vice President, Ruth Altvater and PTO Treasurer, Colleen Korpon pictured here are helping organize and wrap holiday baskets of food.  There were 10 baskets made available to our Southport Middle families for the holidays.  All the food was available through the PTO Food Bank and was courtesy of community donations and students and families of Southport.

PSLPD Reads to SLWK-8 1st Graders

PSLPD came to read holiday stories to first graders for their holiday tea on December 20th. Students enjoyed cookies, juice and a question/answer session with some police officers.

PSLPD Drone Team Hovers at Treasure Coast High

Treasure Coast High’s JROTC US Airforce and Criminal Justice programs hosted the Port St Lucie Police Department’s drone team!  Port St. Lucie Police Officers discussed drone usage in Port St Lucie and demonstrated drone skills for students, Mr. Diego Rios, Mr. Roger Allcroft, Chief Jeffrey Barnes, and Colonel James Golden.
