Southport Middle Sixth Graders Learning to Care for Their Community

Allison Lankow, the Special Projects Coordinator for the Port St. Lucie Public Works Department did a presentation for Southport’s 6th graders on litter prevention and recycling. The students actively participated in the presentation to better understand how being involved in litter prevention and recycling makes their community a better place for both humans and animals alike.

Southport Middle School’s Tip-A-Teacher Night

Southport Middle School recently enjoyed a wonderful evening of community partnership during Tip‑A‑Teacher Night at Texas Roadhouse. Students, families, staff members, and local patrons came together to support SPMS, creating an atmosphere filled with school pride and generosity. Teachers enthusiastically stepped into the role of hosts, assisting the Texas Roadhouse wait staff and connecting with families outside of the classroom in a fun and meaningful way. Southport Middle School’s Fishing Club

 SPMS Fishing Club members have been hard at work learning the many components that make fishing both a skill and a science.  All of this preparation paid off during their recent trip to a nearby pond, where students had the chance to put their knowledge into action. The outing was a great success, with plenty of exciting catches and lots of smiles to go around. Experiences like this help students build confidence, patience, and an appreciation for the outdoors. Southport Middle School’s Family Literacy Night Was a Huge Success

Parents, students, and families who attended Southport’s annual Family Literacy Night enjoyed a great night of music, games, food, and fun. Literacy teachers planned activities like Reading Rocks, Beat the Clock, and Musical Literacy while others served pizza and popcorn — all to provide families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: encourage kids to read. Southport Middle School’s Amazing Artwork

Katherine Avra’s art classes kicked off the year exploring the ELEMENT OF LINE.  All classes started out by learning about line, utilitarian art, and Florida license plate designs. Students created their own personalized license plates with colored pencil.  6th graders learned about Notans, a Japanese term for the harmony of light and dark. We discovered the connections between positive shape, negative space and symmetry. Our theme was sea life; students drew 6 sea life examples, carefully cut them out on black paper and flipped them outward to show symmetry and reveal the positive and negative harmonies. Southport Middle School held an Algebra and Geometry Parent Night on September 24th.  Math teachers, Adrian Mendoza, Jenna Woods, Principal Lydia Martin, and Math Coach Kathleen Manchester helped students solve their math problem during the “Amazing Math Race”. The parents and students were given important information and resources regarding the honors classes their students are taking. The students then participated in an “Amazing Math Race” contest! The Southport Middle School Cafe staff teamed up with art teacher Brenda Pecora and attendance clerk Linda Nelson in a race to make National School Breakfast Week an enjoyable time for everyone at school. Southport Middle School Winter Band Concert Live on Facebook

Under the direction of Bandmaster Mr. Jim LeBon, students in the Southport Middle School band put on an outstanding performance at their annual Winter Band Concert. In case you missed it, the live performance was featured on Southport’s Facebook page, making it available for the families who could not attend. Those who could be there in person enjoyed the Band from social distanced seating in the outdoor arena. The band featured music for the holidays to celebrate this exciting time of the year.

Southport Middle School Welcomes Incoming Village Green Elementary Students

Guidance Counselors from Southport Middle School and Village Green Elementary School coordinated a wonderful reception for Southport’s incoming students for the 2024-2025 school year. Ms. Bernard and Mrs. Cannon’s presentation and a tour of the school gave the future Canes a glimpse into middle school life. Southport Middle School students sweep math competition

Five Southport Middle students placed in the Top 10 from the seven participating St. Lucie County public schools in this year’s Sumdog.com math competition. Southport Middle finished third overall in the math competition among all participating schools. Sumdog.com is a website where the students can practice math skills while playing fun games! Southport Middle School Students Save the Chimps Service Project

Southport Middle School students have been working on a number of service projects this year. For their service project, the Hawks team chose to raise funds and collect donations to benefit Save the Chimps, the world’s largest privately funded chimpanzee sanctuary located in Fort Pierce. As part of the service learning project, the students have been collecting blankets, food, toys, etc. to donate to the sanctuary. Southport Middle School students review FCAT with games

At Southport Middle School, students in Adrianne Mendoza’s seventh grade math class from the Panthers team review for the upcoming math FCAT by playing math Jeopardy. Students had the opportunity to “buzz” in using the eggspert game buzzers to test their knowledge and skill level. Students worked as a team in order to earn points as they competed with the other groups within the classroom.

Southport Middle School students research social issues of 1930s

Southport Middle School seventh graders participated in a carousel activity to develop context for Mildred D. Taylor’s novel “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.” Students were assigned research topics and worked in groups to design posters on economic and social issues of the 1930s. The students then used the posters to teach their classmates about their research topic. By the end of the activity, all students were equipped with background knowledge the 1930s and prepared for a deep understanding of the issues faced by the Logan family and other characters in the novel. Southport Middle School Students Participate in Port St. Lucie Virtual Town Hall for Kids

To celebrate Florida City Government Week, the City of Port St. Lucie hosted a Virtual Town Hall for Kids. Students at four local schools, Morningside Elementary, Southport Middle, Port St. Lucie High and Somerset College Preparatory Academy, submitted videos, asking questions about how their local city government functions. Their questions were geared to members of a five-member panel of City employees, including Mayor Gregory J. Southport Middle School Students Participate in GIRLS ON THE RUN

The Southport Girls on the Run team wrapped up their fall season by completing a 5K this past Saturday. Throughout the program, participants focused on more than just running, they built confidence, strengthened self-esteem, and developed leadership skills that will serve them well beyond the track. The experience empowered these young ladies to believe that anything is possible when they set their minds to it. Southport Middle School Students Learn CPR

Students at Southport Middle School gained essential life-saving skills by learning how to perform CPR. During elective classes, students reported to the Media Center to receive this instruction.  The training empowered students to respond confidently in emergency situations, reinforcing the importance of quick action and preparedness.  District curriculum specialist Emmaline Harvey visited SPMS, offering expert instruction and hands-on guidance.  Ms. Harvey, along with our P.E. coaches, provided students with a deep understanding of CPR, making the lessons both engaging and impactful.
