Our Jersey, Your Impact: Student Athletes Bring New Tradition to Northport K8

Athletes share a lot of similarities before a big home game -pride, pregame jitters, and excitement are just a few of them. But this year, NPK-8 athletes are sharing more than just their feelings. Each basketball player was encouraged to share their jersey for the day with a teacher or staff member that has made an impact on them.

“I got this idea after collaborating with other coaches who do this in their schools,” said Jean-Ann Fret, girls basketball coach. “Not only does it create a positive start to their day, but it’s also a way for students to give back to those teachers who have inspired them.”

The notion does more than boost morale among staff and players, it also shows the students that school comes first when they take on the title of student-athlete.

“Often, student-athletes are seen as those who focus more on their sport and less on school, but this new tradition can help reinforce academics and sportsmanship for everyone,” said Fret. “Being a student always comes first in student-athletes, especially here at Northport.”

Teachers were honored to receive student jerseys and proudly displayed them for the duration of the school day before returning them for the game.
