Our Community’s Future is Rich through Cooking, Diversity, & Inclusion.
In March of this year, students in Mrs. Swertfager’s Culinary Arts 1 class at Fort Pierce Central High School, read a brochure called “Roots to Recipes” to celebrate Women in History month. The brochure was given to Mrs. Swertfager by Doris Tillman, the manager of Fort Pierce Main Street. Stories in the brochure highlight immigrant women who moved to Seattle and opened businesses centered around culinary arts. After reading about these wonderful diverse women, the students answered three questions for their assignment.
Doris then chose the best entries to highlight monthly in the Fort Pierce Focus newsletter. Since May, Rich Lejune, Caitlin Raymond, Tayla Johnson, Lexty Jimenez, Anthony Ketterman, and Cassidy Koch have been featured in the newsletter. Doris is also working on publishing a cookbook highlighting the student’s recipes to sell to the public.
