Students and staff recently enjoyed a Literacy and Linguini Night at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition. Several skits were presented for the guests to watch while they enjoyed a free spaghetti dinner. Students in Melissa Nelson’s class at Allapattah Flats K8 School used cards to understand, create, and practice exponential equations. Danya Etter’s third through fifth grade students at Allapattah K8 School are karate chopping recorders to the next level. Recorder karate is a fun and exciting method that allows students to learn the recorder and test for “karate belts.” These belts hang from their recorders and they earn different colors as the music progressively gets harder. The first song, “Hot Cross Buns,” is a simple yet exciting tune that teaches students three notes: B, A, and G. Members of several St. Lucie County high school HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) organizations attended a leadership conference in the beautiful facility of Camp Kulaqua in High Springs, Florida, accompanied by their teachers. The Leadership Development Camp, or LDC, was definitely worth it all. St. Lucie West Centennial HOSA officers left for that weekend in hopes of learning skills to become more effective leaders, and that goal was accomplished. Sixth grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition presented a walkthrough Egyptian Museum. Parents and students were invited to take a tour of Ancient Egypt. Students were dressed in Egyptian attire and presented information to their audiences. Displays made by the students were shown throughout the pod. It was a great presentation and learning experience. Northport K-8 Northstar team students and their instructors Mala Woessner, Laura oodworth, Mary Ellsworth, Kathy White, Mehgan Drost and Angel Bracero brought the excitement and history of Mardi Gras to the school recently. Students decorated hand made floats, wore Mardi Gras adornments and threw beads as the younger students cheered them on their parade route. Northstar team band and chorus students led the parade playing their instruments and singing the grand old tune, “When the Saints Go Marching In!” Students  participated in a Mardi Gras dance with a DJ. Mardi Gras is a great mix of parades, music, floats and beads. Students learned that the … Read More

Students and staff at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition enjoyed participating in the recent Martin Luther King Jr. parade. This year’s theme was “Reaching Beyond the Dream” and Palm Pointe designed their float using a rocket soaring into the clouds, stars and planets to take his dream into the future. Pictured on the float in the back, from left, are Michelle Farley and B-J Farrell. Students, front row, from left, are Fabrizzio Capocci, Raven Butts, Isaiah Jean, Liam Martinez and Kyle Beard.

The F.K. Sweet Elementary Drama Club recently presented “A Fairy Tale Christmas” for parents and students. Fairy tale characters from all of the favorite classics try to prevent the evil stepmother from ruining Christmas by spreading good cheer with a little help from the Fairy Godmother! Garden City Early Learning Academy (GCELA) celebrated Literacy Week with many fun activities for the students. Curious George was the special guest that visited classrooms to get the students excited about reading. The students participated in a Vocabulary Quilt Contest and reviewed high frequency words. Students were rewarded with a badge/sticker for the number of high frequency words known. In addition, each child received their very own book to take home. GCELA encourages children to read each night for at least 30 minutes. St. Lucie West Centennial High School Navy Junior ROTC field meet competition team participated at a field meet in Miami Beach recently. Even though the team was missing some valuable players, the cadets overcame their disadvantage and took home 10 trophies, the most the unit has ever earned. The cadets took first place in Armed Exhibition Drill and first place in Unarmed Basic Drill, and came in third place overall out of 15 schools. Congratulations to the Black Talon Navy Junior ROTC cadets.

Students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently had a “Twin Day” to raise money for Relay for Life. This organization raises money for cancer awareness and for different services for cancer patients. Each year Palm Pointe participates and several activities are planned to help raise money.  Pictured are third grade students from Rosary Polanco’s class that wanted to all dress alike. Seven seventh grade students from Samuel S. Gaines Academy impressed the judges at the recent districtwide Project Citizen event hosted at Samuel Gaines Academy. With the assistance and support from their civics teacher John Davino, these students were able to impress the judges and represent Samuel Gaines Academy with their proposal that “Suspension should be Suspended!” Pictured, from left, are Mateo Rubio, Adriana Calderon, Ashley Dean, Ebony Young, Yanet Guzman, Tatiana Wilks, and Aide Aguilar as they prepare for their group’s four-minute speech, “Solutions, Solutions, Not Suspension.”

State Farm agent Janine Tillman sponsored the fourth grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition by donating trees and wildflower seeds for Arbor Day. Students learned the importance of taking care of the Earth, not only for themselves but for future generations. The Port St.Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion held its annual Military Ball recently at the Port St. Lucie Community Center. The Military Ball is an event in which cadets participate in a formal dining-out, followed by an informal dance. To begin the events, cadets and their guests proceeded through a receiving line and were greeted by the cadet leadership, led by Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Mabry and Cadet Command Sergeant Major Byron Cruz. The Jaguar Battalion of Port St. Lucie High School participated in the annual parade honoring one of America’s greatest civil rights leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Jaguar Battalion received many accolades from the spectators during the event. The battalion was led by Battalion Commander Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Mabry, followed by the battalion Color Guard, the battalion staff and the three companies with their professionalism. Through the dedication of the cadets and the leadership of the senior cadets, the Jaguar Battalion remained loud and proud throughout the parade. Pictured are the cadets during the parade.

Ft. Pierce Westwood Army JROTC Panther Battalion led their school in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., during the annual MLK parade in Ft Pierce. The 74 Cadets of the battalion were led by Cadet Battalion Commander Maynali Gamez and were accompanied by the color guard, company guidon bearers and an Army High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) from the 1218th Transportation Company of the Florida National Guard. The Panthers also featured a seven-cadet step team led by Cadet Tamiya McClain who pumped up the crowd throughout the march with their unique step routine. Cadet Keundra Durham kept the Panthers in step and … Read More

Fourth grade students in Kim Yoder’s class at Frances K. Sweet Elementary School celebrated mathematical success with ice cream sundaes. Fourth graders have been completing multiplication quick quizzes and post tests throughout the year demonstrating skill, accuracy, and speed. Those students who possess those qualities were rewarded with an ice cream sundae buffet.  With over 20 different toppings, bowls were piled high with sweet rewards for sweet success. Pictured, from left, are Justin Adrian, Stoney Braynen, Cody Harris, and Allen Lin.

St Lucie West Centennial High school Navy Junior ROTC cadets presented the colors at the recent Treasure Coast Navy League Dinner honoring 95 year old Rear Admiral William Jenkins. Admiral Robert J. Papp, the Commandant of the Coast Guard, lauded Admiral Jenkins for his many years of outstanding service to the nation. Northport K-8 students in Pam Mishler’s first grade class and Lisa Cash’s sixth grade class made new friends all in the name of literacy recently when the students paired up to prepare for the school’s vocabulary parade.  Students used words from their reading text for the year to make vocabulary costumes and  hand made signs to wear in the parade to celebrate words. Northport K-8 School kindergarteners in Melody Nieves’ class shared with a room full of parents the many reading and writing skills that they have acquired throughout the school year. Students shared Gingerbread books that illustrated an excellent use of beginning, middle and ending for a story plot, good use of punctuation and started each sentence with a capital letter.
