Counselors Participate in Virtual Tour for Marine Industry

Gaines Student to Compete at State Level

Join us in congratulating Janessa Diaz for being one of the District Science Fair Finalist. Her prototype for a wind turbine will be moving on to the Middle School Engineering division of the state competition. She created a way to measure the efficiency of the turbine by using a pulley system and measured the results of the efficiency of the wind turbine daily to keep records of how the turbine performed. Criminal Justice Student Interns with the City of Fort Pierce

St. Lucie West Centennial High’s Criminal Justice student, Taylor Cuevas, is an Intern with the City of Fort Pierce- Code Enforcement Unit.  This internship allows her to learn and apply her training as an Accredited Legal Professional.  She states that she is gaining new knowledge and appreciates the opportunity.  Taylor plans to attend the University of Central Florida to pursue Criminal Law after high school.  Thank you to Mr. James “Jim” Nichols for offering this opportunity to his students through the Criminal Justice 4 course.

Criminal Justice Virtual Advisory Board

Criminal Justice Academy Educators from St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) participated in a virtual advisory board meeting.  Board members represented: Indian River State College, Keiser University, St. Lucie County Human Resources, St. Lucie County Emergency Operations Center, St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office, SLPS Criminal Justice Educators, and Career and Technical Education department.

Pharmacy Technician Virtual Advisory Board

Fort Pierce Westwood Academy: The WEST Prep Magnet’s Pharmacy Technician Educators (Julie-Anne JnPaul and Bailey Renick) participated in a virtual advisory board meeting.  This included representatives from Indian River State College, University of Florida, Crosstown Pharmacy, Career & Technical Education Department, and Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency.

SLCREA President Presents Books to CA Moore Elementary

The St. Lucie County Retired Educator’s Association unit President, Harry Belafonte Williams, presented a quantity of books to CA Moore Elementary School.  Accepting on behalf of the school are Ms. Latricia Stubbs-James (Principal) and Ms. Kennedy (Assistant Principal).  The photo was taken by Mr. Barriner (Assistant Principal).  Special thanks to Ms. Nancy Spires for spearheading the book collection.

Fort Pierce Central’s Health Science Classes Connect Virtually with Indian River State College

Ms. Barbara Charles, Health Science Educator at Fort Pierce Central High School, hosted a virtual session with Ms. Michelle Cuba from Indian River State College’s Health Science department.  This event included all Ms. Charles’ face-to-face and virtual classes.  Students learned about the various programs, prerequisites for admission, and watched ‘Live in the Lab’ to have a full experience of a field trip through a virtual setting.  

St. Lucie’s SEL Team Presents at National Conference

The SEL Department’s presentation at the Excelerator Virtual Conference sponsored by the national organization, Alliance for Strong Families and Communities was well received.  Traci Wilke, Director of SEL and the district’s SEL Specialists’ Cassey Chang and Christina Coppola shared St. Lucie Public Schools’ journey in Building Capacity for SEL Across a Large District.  Kelly Martin, the Alliance’s Director of Impact for Educational Success shared, “Your presentation was one of the most engaging and enthusiastic sessions of the entire conference, and we are so grateful for the time and expertise you shared with the Alliance network.”

Criminal Justice Students Participate in Federal Court’s Teen Discourse Session

Treasure Coast High School’s Criminal Justice students from Mr. Diego Rios’ class participated in a Teen Discourse Session with Federal Judges and Attorneys.  This is a yearly event that transitioned to a virtual session this school year.  A special thank you to the following individuals making this event possible: Federal Magistrates Maynard and Brennan, U.S. Attorney Brandy Galler, and Attorney Andrew Lowenstein.

Criminal Justice Student’s Career Exploration with St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office

Criminal Justice Academy students from Treasure Coast High School (Mr. Rios’ class) and Fort Pierce Central (Mr. Wilder’s class) participated in a career exploration session with representatives from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.  Fort Pierce Central students were able to participate virtually from their campus.  Guest speakers included Crime Scene Investigation (Bridget Blatchford), K9 (Deputy Hill), and Sherriff’s Explorer Units (Deputy Raynolds, Deputy Gomez).

SLPS Career and Technical Education and Economic Development Council Host Counselor’s Virtual Healthcare Session

St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) partnered with the Economic Development Council (EDC) as an initiative to continue our goals of communicating employment, post-secondary, and scholarship opportunities for our graduating students in St. Lucie Public Schools.  This virtual session featured Mr. Wayne Gent (SLPS Superintendent), Mr. Pete Tesch (EDC President), CareerSource Research Coast, Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital (Martin Health), Indian River State College, Keiser University, Lawnwood Medical Center & Heart Institute (HCA), and St. Lucie Medical Center (HCA).  The participants included SLPS counselors, graduation coaches, and medical educators.

    The Career and Technical Education (CTE) department has been taking its advisory board meetings to the next level.  The advisory board members include Educators from the CTE programs, business partners and post-secondary institutions (Indian River State College and Keiser University). Students Participate in Judge Maynard’s Teen Discourse Session at Federal Courthouse

Students from Fort Pierce Central, Fort Pierce Westwood Academy, Performance Based Preparatory Academy, St. Lucie West Centennial and Treasure Coast High Schools attended a Teen Discourse Session.  This event included students from the Criminal Justice programs where participants heard from multiple professionals working directly in the industry.  Federal Judge Maynard, and Assistant Federal Public Defender Panayotta Augustin-Birch were the organizers for this event held at the Federal Courthouse in Fort Pierce.
