When playing with your food is finally acceptable because you’re modeling scientific information! Ms. Jordan’s 8th-grade classroom (with the assistance of Mr. Tygesson) participated in a lunar phase lab (demonstrating the 8 phases of the moon using Oreos).
Ms. Vasquez’s 7th Grade Civics class worked in groups reading and answering questions, then rotated to different stations. While one student read out loud, the others listened, and then they discussed what could be the best answer. They also participated in a Kagan Strategy (Quiz, Quiz, Trade) to review vocabulary words.
Mrs. Proctor’s class went on a shopping spree! Students were working on being able to analyze and use proportional relationships when problem-solving. Students looked up an item on sale, a sporting goods item, and a game/toy to purchase. Students had to choose which coupon they wanted to use for each item, making sure to get the biggest discount possible. Then, students had to calculate how much they would have to pay to purchase their item once the coupon amount was discounted! The sky was the limit, students were buying cars, houses, pools, yachts and so much more.
Our 8th-grade students were able to put into practice what they learned regarding the Earth’s rotation on its axis and orbiting the Sun. The students were able to create a sundial with plates, bendy straws, a template of the sundial, and a compass. The students could experience and explain how the sun shining down on the straw created a shadow on the sundial. The sundial simply labels each hour that goes by as the Earth rotates. SWAT provides FGMS Students with tools that empower youth to take control of the fight against Big Tobacco. Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) is Florida’s statewide youth organization working to mobilize, educate, and equip Florida youth to revolt against and de-glamorize Big Tobacco. It is a united movement of empowered youth working towards a tobacco-free future. SWAT is designed to create a youth-led, youth-driven club that will work toward the prevention of tobacco use and addiction in local schools and communities.
Our students and staff wore orange for Unity Day, during National Bullying Prevention Month. Unity Day unites students, parents, educators, and community members across the nation to spread the message that we stand together against bullying.
Mrs. Proctors 7th grade students are playing a game called “Capture the Flag,” to review for their Unit 1 assessment on Solving problems involving rational numbers and the four operations! Working in groups students must answer a certain amount of questions and show the teacher; once all questions for that section are correct, they get to steal a flag (colored sticky note) from another table. The students had so much fun and loved playing the game!
Forest Grove Middle School has partnered with THE AMERICAN DREAM FACTORY. Our students have the opportunity to participate in a Video and Photography Team and a 3D Printing Team with this after-school program.
We celebrate the end of the week with an exciting Friday welcome (bubbles) and the Friday Fun Cart for lunch! Students earn Bulldog Bucks for following the BARK Expectations and can spend them on snacks, treats, and school supplies during their lunch time at the Friday Fun Cart.
At Forest Grove Middle School attendance matters! Even on early release days! Every student in attendance received a sweet treat during their lunchtime.
Forest Grove Middle School’s Marine Oceanographic Academy Prep program welcomed an ORCA guest speaker. Students learned and discussed information about data collection for A Day in the Life of the Indian River Lagoon.

In Ms. Roselin‘s 6th Grade math class, the students participated in an around-the-room activity where students took their clipboards and in groups of four, went to four different stations, and solved practice problems involving mixed number multiplication, adding and subtracting decimals and determining place values. This is all to prepare for their next lesson on dividing fractions!
Forest Grove Middle School’s new media specialist, Ms. Geiger, has done a phenomenal job beautifying our media center and getting it ready for our students. She and her volunteers have put in many hours of sorting and organizing books as well as decorating the Media Center with a warm and inviting touch. Forest Grove Middle School is hosting an after-school STEM program for our students, sponsored by Mr. Tygesson and “The American Dream Factory” Students display interest levels, creativity, and inherent leadership skills that they will have a chance to develop, sharpen, and put to full use as the year goes on.
