PBIS Model Schools

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) Model Schools were announced at this evening’s Board Meeting. Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards were provided to 13 schools in the District. (Throughout the entire state, there are only 150 model schools. St. Lucie is proud to celebrate 13 of these schools.) The model schools have met specific criteria as established through the University of South Florida’s PBIS project and have reported innovative, creative and functional ways of supporting PBIS/MTSS in their respective schools.

School-based Immunization Clinics for 6th Graders

School-based Immunization Clinics for 6th Graders (State required TDAP shot prior to entering 7th grade) Agreement with Healthy Schools, LLC, the company that administers the FluMist in the schools. Healthy Schools will come into each school that has 6th graders and offer the TDAP in the same way they have done the FluMist for the past two schools years. Consent Forms and Parent Letters will go home (only to 6th graders who still need the TDAP shot, according to Skyward). Tryouts for Summer Musical Bye Bye Birdie Announced

Do you know a child who can act, sing, and dance? Students in St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) are invited to try out for the 20th annual SLPS summer musical on Tuesday, March 15th, at the Port St. Lucie High School auditorium located at 1201 SE Lennard Road in Port St. Lucie.  Auditions will begin at 6 pm. St. Lucie Public Schools Ranks 11th in State

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – In a report of information compiled annually by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE), St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) once again moves closer to the head of the class in regard to top efficiency ratings for cost per capital outlay. In 2014-2015, the District was ranked 11 out of 67 school districts by reducing costs from $201.00 to $197.00. This compares to a ranking of 15 for the 2013-2014 academic year. The St. Lucie County Reading Council invites parents and students to Bookfest – a March 5, 2016, literacy event hosted by C.A. Moore Elementary School in Fort Pierce. This free reading festival is scheduled from 10 AM to noon and is designed to provide attendees with a wide variety of literacy resources and information.  Activities and resource stations include: Read to a VIP, Community Resource Information Station, Literacy Games and Prizes, Free Literacy Resource Center, Book Exchange, Mother Goose, and much more!

Black History Month Celebration

Dr. McEwen and Mrs. Barr organized a celebration of Black History Month with an assembly for students and staff at the Education Center of St. Lucie County’s Juvenile Detention Center. The assembly followed the national theme for Black History Month, Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African American Memory. In attendance were 38 students, all teaching staff and DJJ staff members. Dr. McEwen presented the assembly, six students recited poetry, Mrs. Barr reviewed and explained the theme, Mr. Hinder shared moments in Black History, and Mr. Small presented the historical sites of Ft. Allapattah Flats Students Become Experts and Share

Ms. Mellion’s students at Allapattah Flats K-8 were engaged in African American History Month using informational texts about Jackie Robinson. Students worked together in groups to become experts on certain parts of his life. They presented to the class their circle maps as well as shared facts they had researched about him. Second graders loved learning about this important historical figure in American History.

Sweet Elementary and Glenna Sigmon, a first grade instructor at Palm Point Educational Research School at Tradition have been selected to be part of an elite pool of 40 professional educators from across the state of Florida to participate in the Florida Teacher Leader Fellowship Program. School District Grade Increases in St. Lucie County

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The district grade awarded to St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) increased from a C to a B this year. This is a significant accomplishment despite the fact that learning gains were not included in the calculations. It is important to note that two SLPS realized multi-grade increases: Rivers Edge Elementary moved from a D to an A and Morningside Elementary advanced from a C to an A. An additional six schools also increased their school grade rating. Huge Savings Result from Efficient Energy Practices in St. Lucie Public Schools

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) Superintendent E. Wayne Gent accepted a rebate check from Florida Power and Light (FPL) in the amount of $97,440.00 during Tuesday’s School Board Meeting. The rebate resulted from the recent installation of a new Thermal Energy System (TES) at Lakewood Park Elementary. The District has had a long-standing commitment to maximizing the efficiency of its facilities, and the installation of such systems in local schools has proven effective. African American History Month Proclamation

February begins the annual observance of African American History Month, celebrating the past and present achievements of African Americans. In February, 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, proposed the establishment of Negro History Week to honor the history and contributions of African Americans to American life. In 1976, the week-long celebration was expanded to a month in honor of the nation’s bi-centennial. Mrs. Latricia Woulard, St. Lucie County 2016 Principal of the Year, read the Proclamation during the February School Board Meeting.
