EDC’s School Counselor & Educator Virtual Tour – Targeted Industry Exploration

The Economic Development Council (EDC) in collaboration with St. Lucie Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) department hosted a live session for school counselors, graduation coaches, CTE educators, and school and district administrators. Participants gained insight into the industry, growth, and employment opportunities within St. Lucie County. The presenters were Two Way Radio Gear, Indian River Select, and The Porch Factory. The presentation highlighted the upcoming Ready to Work Manufacturing and Distribution Boot Camp.

Career Connect

The Career Connect conference was held at the MidFlorida Credit Union Event Center. This event focused on high school seniors for planning and exploring various career pathways. There were representatives from both industry and post-secondary institutions from skilled trades, professional and financial services, hospitality, art and technology, design, healthcare, and manufacturing industry sectors. The conference included sector exhibitors, vendors, guest speakers, keynote speaker, break out sessions, and hands-on demonstrations. CTE Department and Educators Presented at the Florida Career Pathways Network Annual Symposium

The Career and Technical Education(CTE) department along with Mr. Kevin Fess (Northport K-8), Dr. Richard Lanning (Fort Pierce Central High School and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University), and Mr. Phil Depuy (Treasure Coast High School) presented at the 2022 Florida Career Pathways Network conference. The two presentation topics were Career Pathways Programs: From Application to Revamping Program (Application, Planning, Learning) and Virtual Field Trips: A COVID Lesson.

Nursing Assistant Students Visit IRSC’s Health Science and Nursing Programs

Nursing Assistant students from Port St. Lucie High School and St. Lucie West Centennial High School participated in the Indian River State College’s (IRSC) Health Science and Nursing programs’ tour and simulation day! Students worked with the IRSC Nursing students and faculty to get hands-on demonstrations and simulated learning. Students rotated through various presentations to include skill lab training and learning, admission process, opportunities after high school graduation, financial aid, scholarship opportunities, and more! St. Lucie Medical Center Physician’s Virtual DEI Presentation for Health Science Students

Physicians and Medical Residents from St. Lucie Medical Center hosted a virtual Diversity Equity and Inclusion forum for St. Lucie Public School (SLPS) Health Science students. Students heard directly from our local experts on what it takes to be a physician and the suggested steps current high school students may take to achieve their goals! Thank you to Dr. Thomas Matese, Dr. Josephin Mathai, Dr. David Nguyen, Dr. Tim McNamara, and Dr. Kara Mann for putting this session together for over 90 SLPS Health Science students.  

EDC Virtual Tour – Warehouse, Distribution, and Logistics Industry

The Economic Development Council (EDC) hosted a live virtual tour for counselors, educators, school and district administration. The focus for the session was on the warehouse, distribution, and logistics industry. Participants gained knowledge from local industry leaders from FedEx Ground Regional Sortation Center, Southern Eagle Distributing, and Walmart Distribution Center. This tied directly to the newest Career and Technical Education program, Global Logistics and Supply Chain Technology. St. Lucie Public School’s Career and Technical Education department is proud to have collaborated with the Economic Development Council (EDC) for this event!

Allied Health Educators Participate in Advanced Level Training

Allied Health educators from Fort Pierce Westwood Academy: The WEST Prep Magnet and Port St. Lucie High School attended a professional development session surrounding the newest manikin technology purchased for their campus. To meet the needs of students training at the next level, our Career and Technical Education students are going to use these manikins to have simulated learning directly in their classrooms. Pharmacy Technician Pre-Apprentices Connected with IRSC’s Apprenticeship

Students from Mrs. Julie-Anne JnPaul’s Pharmacy Technician program at Fort Pierce Westwood Academy: The WEST Prep Magnet, attended a virtual session with Indian River State College (IRSC).  Dr. Jessica Fulton from IRSC spoke with the graduating seniors regarding opportunities for them to continue on their academic-career path as Pharmacy Technicians.  This session included a presentation, question and answer segment, and students were able to leave the session with knowledge and plans for their future!    

Biotechnology Virtual Lab with Keiser University

The Industrial Biotechnology program (Mr. John Williams’ students) at Treasure Coast High School (TCHS) collaborated with Keiser University’s Biotechnology department.  This virtual lab session was led by Dr. Weir of Keiser University to provide a simulated lab experience for the TCHS students preparing for their Biotechnician Assistant industry certification exam.

2021 Ready to Work Boot Camp Kick-off with Economic Development Council

The 2021 Ready to Work Boot Camp Informational session hosted by Jill Marasa with the Economic Development Council of St. Lucie and St. Lucie Public School’s Career and Technical Education department was a virtual event.  This session included interested graduating high school seniors within St. Lucie Public Schools desiring employment immediately upon graduation in manufacturing and engineering industry sectors.      

CareerSource Research Coast Hosts Virtual Session with Graduating Medical Academy Students

Mary Murphy from CareerSource Research Coast in conjunction with Career & Technical Education department hosted a career exploration session for medical academy seniors.  This session was to follow-up to the EDC’s Virtual Healthcare Tour for guidance counselors and teachers that occurred in Fall 2020.  Participating students learned about available resources and employment opportunities within our county and on the Treasure Coast.

Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital Representatives Hosted Employment Opportunities Session for CTE Medical Seniors

Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital (Brenda Byk and Stacey Rhodewalt) in collaboration with SLPS’ Career & Technical Education (CTE) Department hosted a virtual employment informational session for our medical students.  This session provided entry-level employment information for our graduating seniors and steps to turn their career and educational goals into reality!  

St. Lucie Medical Center’s Emergency Medicine Residency DEI Physician’s Forum with CTE Medical Students

CTE Medical teachers and students from St. Lucie Public Schools participated in a virtual forum with Dr. Thomas Matese, Dr. Josephin Mathai, Dr. Ashkahn Zomorrodi, Dr. Nguyen, and Dr. McNamara from St. Lucie Medical Center. Over 200 SLPS Medical students learned about the process to become a Physician from the St. Lucie Medical Center’s Emergency Medicine Residency DEI group.  This presentation also included Resident students currently in the Emergency Medicine program sharing their personal experiences and pathway to achieve their medical career goals.

HCA Hospital Virtual Employment Presentation with Graduating Seniors in Medical Academies

Tina Ankeny, representing St. Lucie Medical and Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute met with with St. Lucie Public School (SLPS) medical students on various topics related to employment and career opportunities within the local hospitals.  The medical teachers joined in via Teams to allow their graduating seniors an opportunity to network with HCA hospital representatives and learn how their earned industry certification will get them entry-level positions after graduation.  This session is a follow-up to the SLPS and EDC Counselor’s Healthcare Bus Tour session held in February 2021.  

Career and Technical Education Programs Connect with St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office Drone Team

Fort Pierce Westwood students from Ms. Mildred Brown’s Criminal Justice program, Mrs. Ursula Johnson’s Digital Media program, and Mrs. M.E. Musgrave’s Medical program joined the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team for a live presentation.  Students learned about the significance of the drone team to our law enforcement agencies and community, sUAS Part 107 industry certification, and career opportunities after high school.  Sergeant Wes Harbrin organized this event for SLPS students enrolled in these various programs.  Additionally, students preparing for their 911 Telecommunications industry certification exam were able to connect with our local law enforcement business and community partners! … Read More

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team Demonstration with Centennial’s Criminal Justice Students

Representatives from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Drone team hosted a live demonstration for Criminal Justice and Law Academy students from St. Lucie West Centennial High School.  Special thanks to SLPS Criminal Justice Advisory Board member, Sergeant Wes Harbrin from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office for setting up this event!  Mrs. Angela Baumgarten’s students were engaged and learned about skills, training, and career options for sUAS industry certification and the connection of drones to the field of law enforcement.  

Counselors Participate in Virtual Tour for Marine Industry
