A Sweet Taste of Hispanic Heritage at Lawnwood Elementary School

Conchas, Jamaica y Limonada: ¡Qué Rico!

Conchas & Coolers: Sweet Bread, Bright Sips

As part of Lawnwood Elementary’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, our faculty and staff enjoyed a special cultural treat featuring conchas, jamaica, and limonada. It was a sweet and refreshing way to celebrate Hispanic heritage while learning a little more about the traditions behind these delicious favorites.

A Little About Conchas

Conchas are a traditional Mexican sweet bread, or pan dulce. These soft, round, slightly sweet rolls are topped with a crunchy, cookie-like layer of sugar that is carefully scored to resemble a seashell.
  • What’s in a name? The Spanish word concha means “shell,” which describes the beautiful shell-like design on top of the bread.
  • A sweet topping: The topping is typically made with flour, sugar, and butter or shortening and is often flavored with vanilla or chocolate. Conchas may also come in colorful varieties, including the familiar pink topping.
  • A favorite tradition: Conchas are commonly enjoyed for breakfast or as a snack and are often paired with coffee or hot chocolate. They are a favorite treat found in Mexican and Latin American bakeries.
Our Conchas & Coolers treat was about more than enjoying something delicious. It was another opportunity for the Lawnwood family to celebrate, learn about, and appreciate the rich cultures and traditions represented within our school community.
¡Qué rico! What a sweet way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at Lawnwood Elementary!
