St. Lucie West Centennial High School Students with Science in Action

Our students are making waves in science! On October 22, AP Biology and AICE Marine A Level students participated in a Citizen Science Project with ORCA, taking their learning directly into the Indian River Lagoon.

During this hands-on experience, students worked alongside professionals to conduct research focused on the health and environmental challenges affecting the lagoon. With guidance from ORCA and support through a partnership with the Department of Environmental Protection, students collected samples and completed measurements that will contribute to research connecting environmental toxicity with biodiversity.

Experiences like this allow students to see how the science they study in the classroom connects to important issues within their own community. They also build critical thinking, collaboration, research, and problem-solving skills.

We are incredibly proud of our students for embracing this opportunity and becoming active participants in protecting and understanding our local environment!
