On September 11, St. Lucie West Centennial High School NJROTC cadets gathered at the school’s flagpole to honor and remember the victims, first responders, and families affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Twenty-five years ago, 19 terrorists associated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes in a coordinated attack against the United States. Two aircraft were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third struck the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and a fourth, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew members fought back against the hijackers. The attacks claimed the lives of 2,977 victims and forever changed the nation.
As part of the school’s remembrance ceremony, C/PO1 Shamira Mujica, C/SA Obidiah Mildor, and C/SN Matthew Margeson participated in the flag detail. C/SA Mildor, serving as the Flag Detail Commander, gave the commands throughout the ceremony as the cadets rendered honors with dignity and respect.
Following the flag ceremony, C/PO2 Fletcher delivered remarks reflecting on the events of September 11 and honoring those who lost their lives, as well as the first responders who demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness that day.
The ceremony concluded with remarks from the school’s principal, providing students, faculty, staff, and cadets an opportunity to reflect on the significance of September 11 and the importance of remembering those whose lives were lost or forever changed.
Through ceremonies such as this, SLW Centennial NJROTC cadets continue to demonstrate the program’s commitment to citizenship, service, respect, and remembrance. The observance served as a reminder to future generations of the sacrifices made on September 11, 2001, and the importance of ensuring that those sacrifices are never forgotten.
