Forest Grove Middle School Hosts Reality Store for 7th & 8th Grade Students

Forest Grove Middle School hosted our 2025-2026 Reality Store. Our students learned some powerful life lessons during this real-world activity.

What is the Reality Store?

The Reality Store gives students a hands‑on look at the financial responsibilities adults face every day. Students begin in their math classes, where they receive a simulated income—based on their GPA—and a family size. After calculating basic taxes and student loan payments, they determine the money they’ll have available during the activity.

At the Reality Store, students rotate through stations representing real‑life expenses such as housing, transportation, food, childcare, medical care, and other necessities. As they make choices, they quickly see how income limits or expands their lifestyle options.

A key purpose of the activity is to show the connection between education and future opportunities. Because income is tied to GPA, students can see how stronger academic performance can lead to better jobs, higher earnings, and more stability in adulthood. Many leave with a clearer understanding that their choices today—studying, setting goals, and taking responsibility—shape their future possibilities.

By the end, students often gain a deeper appreciation for the financial challenges families manage and feel more motivated to make educational decisions that support their long‑term goals.
