The students in Ms. Jacob’s 5th Grade class explored decimal multiplication by solving problems multiplying decimal numbers and whole numbers. Using place value blocks, visual models, and whiteboards, students applied place value strategies to multiply decimals by one-hundredth, deepening their understanding of NSO.2.5 (Multiply a multi-digit number with decimals to the tenths by one-tenth using place value strategies and models. Multiply a multi-digit number with decimals to the tenths by one-hundredth using place value strategies and models). This promoted the concrete representations and collaborative problem-solving. The students enjoyed building and engaging with other students. According to a student, she stated at the end of the lesson, “I liked working with my partner and figuring it out together—it felt like a puzzle!”
