Students in Mrs. Herndon’s 2nd grade class at Fairlawn Elementary used various pretzels to represent three digit place value.  Students enjoyed the tasty lesson as they learned to add two and three digit numbers together.

Mornings are fun when they begin with STEM learning! In our literature text that we have been reading, Wonder, the main character turned in a project based on pyramids. Today, we identified the different parts of a pyramid and then began constructing different types of pyramids. We tested our pyramids for strength and identified the patterns in the shapes, faces, edges and vertices.

Oak Hammock K-8 participates in PBIS program as a schoolwide reward system. Students in the self-contained classroom in grades 4th- 8th operate the Osprey Cart Reward Program. This program allows the self-contained students many opportunities to practice functional skills by utilizing the task analysis approach for learning. The classroom teachers, Ms. Savanello and Ms. Haley support the students by providing the online order form and assist the students in breaking down the task into manageable parts to ensure the orders are completed successfully. Northport K-8 held its first SEL Virtual Parent Night. It was a Night of Family Learning (NFL) where students, teachers, and families experienced some of the engaging SEL activities that the children get to do each day! With 64 participants, the School-Home Connection was strengthened and fun was had by all! The event was sponsored by Chik-Fil-A and Sal’s Italian Ristorante, who provided door prizes. Students in Mr. Redding’s 5th grade  Social Studies class at Rivers Edge Elementary School are studying why the colonists died off in Jamestown. Students wrote original scripts and performed them like a tv news brief, discussing each of the three main reasons! #REEREAL #schoolwithaheartofgold

Anthony Mendoza, 7th grader from Mrs. Silva’s class won big at the science fair with his project called Quick Charge. His project category is systems software, and he was chosen to represent St. Lucie Public Schools at the 66th VIRTUAL SSEF (State Science and Engineering Fair of Florida). In the most difficult school year while the pandemic is still going on, Anthony has undertaken the challenge of participating in the Science Fair and earned the opportunity to compete at the State level.  Way to go Anthony and Mrs. Silva!  Congratulations to the entire family!

  Miss Hailey Mangio was among the 15,000 finalists named in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically accomplished students are now eligible for continued competition in the program, which awards National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million each spring. St. Lucie West K-8 Middle School students in Mrs. Eldridge’s Art classes learned all about Medieval Inspired Illuminated Letters. This art form uses different kinds of illuminated letters, including ornamented letters, historiated letters, and inhabited letters and were commonplace in Medieval manuscripts in Europe between the 4th and 16th centuries. Students captured the technique perfectly. BEAUTIFUL ART SHARKS!

Congratulations to Madison Tredor from Mrs. Tredor’s Rising Stars class for winning the St Lucie County Florida Retired Educators Association essay contest! Fifth-grade students in St Lucie County were asked to write about a happy memory with a grandparent or other elderly person. Madison’s essay is an endearing story of cherished time spent with her grandmother, Lorraine. Her essay will be sent to the FREA District 9 competition. This is the sixth consecutive year that the winning essay has come from Mrs. Tredor’s Rising Stars class. Congratulations, and good luck, Madison!

Mrs. Hughes’s 6th Grade ELA classes have been working hard on their Black History Month projects for a few weeks now. Students chose a historical figure to research and then wrote an essay about them the first week of study. The following week they made a project out of their person to share with their classmates. Students had the choice to do a poster, PowerPoint presentation, flip book, or song/rap. Over 100 early childhood educators engaged in a virtual conference that took place on Saturday, February 6th. The Keynote Speaker was Jane Whitaker, while Craig Jerome and Laurie Boyer handled the technology aspect of the conference. Presenting partners for the virtual conference include the Early Learning Coalition, ALPI Head Start, and St. Lucie Public Schools.  The event was sponsored by business partners including, Discount School Supply, Kaplan, Kidvision, and Lakeshore.
