Pat Kelly, who this season guided the Treasure Coast High School boys basketball team to the best record in the program’s 12-year history, has been named the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches Class 9A Coach of the Year. Under Kelly, the Titans started 16-0, finished 26-2, won their second consecutive District 8-9A title and advanced to the Region 2-9A semifinals before losing to 2017 state champion Kissimmee-Osceola.
“It’s nice to be recognized by my peers,” Kelly said. “It’s a reflection of the fact that we had a group of kids who came together and played well and were persistent in trying to accomplish their goals. The kids deserve the credit for buying in.” The loss ended a school-record 26-game regular-season winning streak. The 16-0 start was the eighth-longest in area history and the best by a St. Lucie County team since high school basketball began in 1919-20.
