ST. LUCIE COUNTY – While summertime may bring up thoughts of vacation and relaxation, it is not a good time to take a break from nutrition. That’s why St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) proudly supports the summer meals programs for kids eighteen and under. According to SLPS Director of Child Nutrition Services Deborah Wuest, “Children who are eligible to receive free meals will find open sites on many school campuses. We serve breakfast, lunch, and snacks. All the students need to do is register with the front office before they come to the cafeteria.”
SLPS sites offering this free service through August 4, 2017, include Garden City, Lakewood Park, Northport K-8, Manatee, Mariposa, St. Lucie West K-8, and Windmill Point. Sites offering meals through July 10, 2017, include: C. A. Moore, Dale Cassens, Forest Grove, Lawnwood, Performance Based Preparatory Academy, Samuel S. Gaines, Southport, and West Gate K-8. SLPS also partners with organizations such as Boys and Girls Clubs to support summer meals at other sites. For a complete listing of sites or to find a location near your, go to www.SummerFoodFlorida.org or dial 211. Families can also call SLPS Child and Nutrition Services at 772-429-6229 for additional information.
When asked about the program’s success rate, Wuest said that her staff from Child Nutrition Services serves almost 4,000 meals and provides nearly 1,000 snacks daily. “Our children are in need of nutritious meals and healthy snacks throughout the year – summer is no exception.”
