SLW Centennial High School Culinary students truly brought their learning to life. As part of the unit on Culinary Math and Product Identification, students stepped beyond the pages of the textbook and into a fully immersive, hands-on experience in the kitchen.
Instead of reviewing material in a traditional way, students worked collaboratively in small teams to identify various types of small wares, kitchen equipment, and cutlery. The activity encouraged students to think critically and apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world environment, fostering both teamwork and practical understanding.
The lab then transitioned into a product identification challenge, where students used all their senses—sight, smell, and even taste—to distinguish between similar ingredients and products. This exercise highlighted how subtle differences can make a major impact in professional kitchens and underscored the importance of attention to detail in culinary arts.
The energy in the lab was vibrant and focused. Students were deeply engaged, asking thoughtful questions, collaborating effectively, and enjoying the process of discovery. By combining academic concepts with interactive exploration, the lab not only strengthened technical skills but also inspired creativity, curiosity, and confidence in the next generation of culinary professionals. Way to go EAGLES!
