In the 9th annual Project Citizen District Showcase, Southport Middle School students Johnathan Almeida, Abigail Ward, and Makenzie Fairchild presented their project entitled “The Overuse of Plastics in St. Lucie County” which created public policy on reducing plastic usage. The students worked hard for weeks after school to create and implement an action plan. For their presentation, they explained how they would carry out their plan. Project Citizen is a county-wide initiative that helps to deepen students’ understanding of their Civics content. It teaches seventh grade students about legislation and promotes responsible participation in local and state government.
