Shirley Helton named Florida Stock Market Challenge teacher of the year

Fairlawn Elementary School fifth grade teacher Shirley Helton has been named the Distinguished Stock Market Challenge Advisor of the Year for the State of Florida for demonstrating excellence in teaching economics skills of free enterprise and financial literacy. Each year, the Florida Council on Economic Education and Publix Super Markets Charities recognize a Distinguished Stock Market Advisor who goes above and beyond in teaching children about how financial markets work, how to invest money, and entrepreneurship.  Helton’s fifth grade students this year won first place in the state Stock Market Challenge Elementary Division in the Fall Competition and second place in the state Spring Competition. Helton has also been nominated for Excellence in Teaching History Award for the State of Florida.  Sponsored by Pearson Prentice Hall, this award is to recognize and celebrate a Florida teacher of history who encourages an appreciation and respect for the discipline of history, involves students in the historical process, and evidences mastery of the subject matter.
