St. Lucie West K8’s Magnificent Math Night at Publix

St. Lucie West K-8 Math Night for K-5th grade was amazing! Students had a Fin-Tastic time walking through the aisles of Publix, exploring different departments, and solving real-world math problems. It was a fun, hands-on experience that truly brought learning to life. Students thoroughly enjoyed solving problems with their teachers, friends, staff, and our Proud Principal, Mr. Lezeau! It was a wonderful way to bring our families of Shark Nation and community together to emphasize the importance of mathematics in our everyday lives. St. Lucie West K8 Shark Nation families and staff danced and dazzled as they enjoyed a magical evening. What an unforgettable night we had at our Arabian Nights Parent-Child Dance! St. Lucie West K8 celebrated our 3rd Annual Friendsgiving with a thankful heart. The amazing administrative team prepared and served a full Thanksgiving feast for the entire faculty and staff. St. Lucie West K8 Sharks are Word Sleuths in training! Ms. Paries’ third-grade students transformed into Word Detectives during their reading classes today. Facing unfamiliar vocabulary head-on, they learned the power of context. Instead of being stumped, students actively searched for textual “footprints” surrounding the unknown words. These clues, embedded within sentences and paragraphs, provided vital insights. This newfound skill allows them to independently navigate complex texts, boosting both reading comprehension and overall confidence. St. Lucie West K8 teacher surprised with honor

St. Lucie West K8 fourth grade teacher Shannon Tango was surprised recently when representatives of an area radio station visited her class as part of the station’s monthly teacher recognition program. Tango was nominated by a parent of one of her students, who credited Tango with inspiring her students to achieve in the classroom, and for making learning fun! St. Lucie West K8 students learn about math theory

St. Lucie West K-8 eighth grade students have found a unique way to learn about the Pythagorean theorem, by putting their problems down on the sidewalks around school! Not only did the students in Carol Matulonis’ class learn about the mathematical theorem, but students viewing their artwork were able to see how it works. St. Lucie West K8 students learn about cell structure in biology

Students in Lindsey Laury’s seventh grade science classes at St. Lucie West K8 School are kicking off the year’s fourth quarter learning about DNA and RNA, and how proteins play an important part in DNA development. Students created edible DNA models using Twizzlers and marshmallows to emphasize the physical components of such an important biological structure. St. Lucie West K8 student earns scholarship

Congratulations to Jonathan Burgos, eighth grade St. Lucie West K8 student who was selected as a recipient of the 2012 President’s Challenge/Take Stock in Children Scholarship. The Deerbrook Charitable Trust, St. Lucie County Education Foundation, Fort Pierce Sunrise Kiwanis Club, Indian River State College Foundation and many other local businesses and organizations sponsor this program to recognize and encourage student achievement. The scholarship covers two years of study at IRSC and two years at a Florida public college or university.

St. Lucie West K8 STEM Fair

Shark Nation was well-represented at this year’s STEM Fair. Ten students were invited to showcase their projects during the event. Students had to explain their reasoning behind their projects to judges. While at Indian River State College, they had the opportunity to visit the Robotics and EMT labs. St. Lucie West K8 Spreads Holiday Cheer

Our campus was bursting with holiday cheer as Sharks celebrated in style! Throughout the month of December, our Holiday Spirit Calendar celebrated Grinch Day, PJ Day, and Ugly Sweater Day, while festive guest readers added extra joy to the season. We kept the excitement going with twin turtle doves, sparkling tinsel, cozy socks, festive hats, and even Hawaiian attire! St. Lucie West K8 fourth graders in Ms. Rivera’s ELA classes buzzed with excitement as they paired up for a collaborative back-to-school activity. Each student had a chosen book, ready to share its imagined connection to their personality. Students then explained their selections, revealing hidden facets of themselves through literary lenses. Afterward, students explored the classroom library, a vibrant haven of stories waiting to be discovered. St. Lucie West K8 Sharks Spin the Wheel

Students in Ms. Paries’ class were pumped to play Zoink and spin the wheel! They worked in teams to read passages and answer questions. Along with other skills, they focused on identifying the author’s claim and finding the evidence that supports it!

St. Lucie West K8 Sharks in Motion

Middle school students in Ms. Velazquez’s science classes learned how to describe motion with graphs. Students answered two essential questions; how an object’s motion can be recorded on a graph and how can a graph help you understand an object’s motion. They had four different tasks to perform: hopping, walking backwards, walking normally, and speed walking.  They were timed and given how quickly they arrived at the appointed destination (5 meters and 10 meters) which they then wrote down. Students in Mrs. D’Andrea’s 3rd grade Gifted Class discovered and investigated real-world examples of the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Students identified the characteristics of each item and compared the item’s masses. Way to go, scientific Sharks!    

St. Lucie West K8 science teacher to present at national conference

St. Lucie West K8 eighth grade science teacher Debra Quintero has been selected to present at the 2012 National Science Teachers Conference in Indianapolis in April.  Pictured are Ms. Quintero and Todd Hilgendorff, of Farnsworth Middle School, Guiderland, New York, who will share a series of lessons based on their experiences working with marine researchers in the North Atlantic.  Their session is entitled Authentic Research Experiences in the Inquiry Science Classroom.  

St. Lucie West K8 PTO Back-to-School Fundraiser at Blaze Pizza

The Parent Teacher Organization of SLWK8 collaborated with Blaze Pizza in Tradition for their Back-to-School fundraiser. Parents and staff took advantage of the night off from cooking.  The PTO and Shark Nation family are grateful for the support, especially from our Proud Principal, Mr. Lezeau!
