C.A. Moore Elementary School participated in Celebrate Literacy, Florida Week by community members coming into the school to read. Each classroom had a community person read to the students. The guest readers read the book, The Giving Tree and each class now has a copy of the book. Ms. Felicia Nixon, principal made a special presentation on morning announcements. Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll donated a book about Florida. Her message to the students was to keep reading their 800 minutes per quarter and that she is proud of all of them. C.A. Moore had over 300 students who had 95-100% attendance for Quarter 1. Students had a chance to throw a whipped cream pie at the Attendance Team as their reward for coming to school. As you can see from the smiles, everyone had a great time!! Students in 3rd – 5th grade have started a unit entitled What Can AI Do? They will be exploring a variety of AI technologies to establish a strong foundational knowledge about what AI is, how AI works, and how AI technologies might be used to help people. Students will be exploring several examples of AI programs to consider what tasks AI does well and which tasks AI does not do well. Fifth grade students at Mariposa Elementary observed the life cycle of a butterfly during their science unit on living organisms. They learned about plant and animal adaptations, including complete and incomplete metamorphosis. The students finished off this unit by releasing the butterflies into their natural environment. Fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Zoie Griffiths, releases a butterfly as Travis Nimal looks on.
St. Lucie County Retired Educators visited St. Lucie Elementary. The Retired Educators of St. Lucie County donated all items needed to start a butterfly garden on campus to the classes of Ms. Kurtti and Ms. Lewis. Principal Woulard along with the entire staff and student body of St. Lucie Elementary are thankful for the beautiful addition to their campus.
Mrs. Price’s 2nd graders studied the metamorphosis of butterflies during their life cycle. The second graders were able to observe the changes butterflies go through from the egg to the adult stage and how butterflies develop different structures that help them meet their basic needs in very different ways. Once the butterflies became adults Mrs. Price and her students set them free in the Village Green Garden.

The two 2013 Business Partners of the Year for St. Lucie Public Schools were recognized at the May 28, 2013, St. Lucie County School Board meeting. The 26th Annual Commissioner’s Business Partner recognition reception, sponsored by the Florida Department of Education, will be held June 13, 2013, in Tampa where the state winner will be named. School districts throughout the state may nominate one, two or three businesses, depending on student population, for the state honor. Allapattah Flats K8 first graders were treated to a special event after studying animals in science. Cheryl Wise from Busch Wildlife Sanctuary educated first graders about Florida wildlife and habitats. First graders were able to touch an alligator, opossum, bofu frog, king snake and a skunk. Students beam, anxiously awaiting their turn to touch the bofu frog. Pictured, from left, are Andre Hayle, Angelica Maldonado, Jaydin White, Enrique Mojica, and Courtney Waithe. They were also able to see an owl, compare and contrast features of an alligator to a crocodile, and visit with a tortoise. What a great day to be in first grade at Allapattah Flats K-8!
Staff members from the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary visited the Bobcats team at Southport Middle School. The presentation was part of a conservation unit with the student teacher in Christine Richards’ sixth grade reading classes.
