In November, members of the School Counseling Team coordinated for the National Theater for Children to stop by Bayshore to do a performance for our K-2 students. During this performance, students learned about energy conservation, how we measure energy used, how energy is wasted, and what renewable energy is. During the show, students learned important lessons about energy efficiency, and teachers were provided lessons and activities to prolong the engagement for well after the end of the performance. St. Lucie Elementary students received a special presentation from the National Theatre for Children. During the presentation, the students learned from Captain Wattage the importance of energy conservation and how they can reduce energy consumption at home. Since 1978, The National Theatre for Children has dedicated itself to teaching young students about important and timely issues. Students from West Gate K-8 were recently visited by Rick Bender, a cancer survivor. Rick is a motivational speaker who shares his story of surviving throat cancer after losing a section of his face to illustrate the dangers of spitless tobacco. He had the students captivated with his personal story and the information he imparted about the big tobacco companies that target the youth. Weatherbee Elementary participated in the 2012 Circle of Hope, an event designed to raise awareness of various forms of cancer as well as to raise money for research. As a part of this year’s event, several cancer survivors were interviewed and the program was broadcast live to all classrooms. First grade students enjoyed their day at the 4-H farm. Students were able to see up-close various animals on the farm.
Mrs. Bueno and Ms. Vazquez joined together for book buddies. Second-graders in Mrs. Bueno’s class did a wonderful job reading and showing the Kindergarteners in Ms. Vazquez’s class how to read! When students come together to lift each other up we can continue to soar to new heights!

Incoming Kindergarten students at Chester A. Moore K8 Academy of Success didn’t know they would get to meet the character in their read-aloud when they came to Kindergarten Kick-off this past Wednesday. Curious George (AKA Principal Lexi Laoutas) surprised students with this special visit. Students got to spend the morning with their teachers to see what life will be like in a kindergarten classroom.
