Mrs. Proctor’s 6th grade Science class is working on a unit about force. To reach the learning goal, students will understand the difference between contact forces and forces acting at a distance and be able to describe how an unbalanced force affects an object. Students were able to build catapults out of any material on the table, test their inventions with catapulting a cotton ball, recording the distance the ball traveled, and answer questions about force and motion. Students from CAST participated in the Fort Pierce Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest. These students won first, second, third, and honorable mention. We are so proud! Congratulations to Mr. Cruz and his students!

Fourth graders in Mrs. Church’s hybrid class learned about the abstract artist Piet Mondrian as they reviewed how to find the perimeter and area of quadrilaterals. Mondrian is famous for using geometric figures and primary colors in his art. Students were tasked to create their own piece of Mondrian-inspired artwork using only squares and rectangles with a perimeter or area of 20, then added primary colors of their choosing.  

Look at these headpieces our art students created for our theatre students to wear in the production of Lion King! We are so incredibly proud of the collaboration between our fine arts classes. We can’t wait to see you at one of our next shows on January 25 and 26!

Mr. German’s 5th-grade Scientists are currently studying types of heat transfers, which are conduction, convection, and radiation. Today the students are investigating solar radiation by constructing pizza box solar ovens which allow the heat from the sun to transfer onto the s’mores. The most exciting part was when the scientists were able to taste the effects that solar radiation has on graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows!           

CAST’s Leadership League went live on Facebook to teach families about Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind. Teachers at CAST teach our students to have a plan and set goals for the day so they can be successful. Habit 1: Be Proactive! This is a part of the Leader in Me program, a pillar at CAST. We celebrated Spring Break right around the corner by discussing how our families can be in charge of their brain and heart!

On Wednesday, August 28th, CAST held their first Stop and STEAM day of the year! This month’s school-wide event focused on the first letter of STEAM, “S”, for science. Teachers in grades K-8 designed and facilitated hands-on activities for their students to study and apply the scientific method in a variety of ways from investigations of color and shape to hypothesizing about changes in particles. Stay tuned for next month’s Stop and STEAM event highlighting technology.  

Mrs. Albers’ sixth-grade classes explored force and motion using zSpace technology in our CAST Science Lab. They observed how friction, mass, and the amount of force affected the distance a block would travel. zSpace technology encourages and inspires students to interact with the curriculum and to experiment through augmented and virtual reality!  

CAST Middle School Yearbook students played a game called “Blind Artist” in a recent Graphic Arts class. Blind Artist is a partner game that builds relationships in class, while students learn crucial elements like the importance of communication, patience, and trusting others. The “Director” verbally guided the artists by only saying lines, directions, and shapes. The artists, who must have their eyes shut tight, drew the picture according to the director’s instruction.

Last week the CAST Band Program, under the direction of Mr. Sandon Chevlin, presented their end-of-semester concert. The concert included four selections performed by the Sixth Grade Beginning Band, three selections performed by the Seventh/Eighth Grade Concert Band, “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” performed by the Wind Ensemble, and an arrangement of a theme from the Nutcracker performed by an advanced clarinet quintet made of students and the director. For half of the students in the concert, it was their first band concert ever. What an exciting and incredible experience!

Sixth graders in Mrs. Proctor’s Science class are learning about plant cells and the structure and function of major organelles. To help students understand this concept better, Mrs. Proctor’s classes used watercolor paints to paint a plant cell and its structures. Once painted, students labeled the structures and identified what function each one has.

Mrs. Gamez’s virtual first graders at CAST listened to “The Dot” then created their own artistic interpretation of a dot. Students then shared a personal story connected to their version of the dot. Some examples included a sun, heart, house, and Godzilla! This lesson strengthened the mindset we cultivate at CAST that anyone can be an artist!

Middle School Visual Arts students collaborated with the St. Lucie Cultural Alliance, St. Lucie Environmental Resources Department and Oxbow Eco-Center to create up-cycling sculptures for the St. Lucie Earth Day Festival. Students learned facts about recyclable materials and being good stewards of our natural resources and environment.  Students were provided recyclable items by the St. Lucie Environmental Resources Department and created their up-cycled sculptures by integrating objects like metal clothes hangers, plastic water and soda bottles, bottle caps, plastic beads, foam, textiles, and paper products to help create their animal forms.  Students also used stones to create different pieces of … Read More

CAST kindergarten and first grade students attended a virtual presentation put on by UF’s Family Nutrition Program. The presentation was part of 6-week series focused on handwashing, healthy eating, and gardening. These lessons are a great complement to our own gardening outside!
