Northport K-8 School held a very memorable Black History Month celebration in the school gymnasium recently. The Northport middle grades band and chorus performed special numbers commemorating Black History and selected students honored important cultural role models such as President Obama, Michelle Obama and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Special guest who served as keynote speaker was former Northport principal, Gloria Johnson Scott. Mrs. Johnson Scott reminded students that each was important and as long as you believe in yourself and conceive an idea or plan that it could be achieved through hard work and dedication. The program was a wonderful celebration of the … Read More

As part of the GOMATH program at Allapattah Flats K8, fourth graders have been learning how to calculate the area of two-dimensional shapes. They started out estimating the area of given shapes, then used various strategies like counting, multiplying, and using mathematical formulas to find the area of complex shapes. Students especially loved solving problems that relate to real world situations. To engage the students, they were given an activity that involved drawing their own uniquely, designed robot on grid paper and finding the area. It was a chance for the fourth graders to show both their creativity and understanding of math skills. … Read More

Murals and models of the ocean floor were created by the students in the challenge program at Frances K. Sweet Elementary. Students worked cooperatively on a class mural diagramming features of the ocean floor and the animals that live there. Students in Carmela Innamorato’s kindergarten class at Windmill Point had a delectable time learning about the night sky! Students used Oreos as they explored how the stars and moon are in the night sky. The cookies helped students to see why the phases of the moon make the moon look different each night. Varsity cheerleaders from Lincoln Park Academy hosted cheer camp at Frances K. Sweet Elementary recently. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade had the opportunity to learn cheers, chants, and enjoy a dance. The students then performed for a packed crowd at an LPA’s boys’ basketball game.

The Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion School presented the colors during the National Anthem to open the Jaguar Baseball Team’s first game of the season. Assistant principal April Rogers threw out the first pitch opening the game for the season. The Color Guard was led by Cadet Major Devynn Rhodes, who was accompanied by Cadet Second Lieutenant Tyler Lynn, Cadet Second Lieutenant Ashlee Seipel, and Cadet Staff Sergeant Allison Miakisz. The Samuel S. Gaines Academy Soccer Team went 3-2 at the District Winter Tournament. Lead by captains Manuel Esquivel #20, and Jean Saintable #10, the team advanced to the semi-finals. The leading scorer for the day was Luis Gil #4, who had six goals, beating the team record of 5 goals set a year earlier by his cousin Jesus Gil. While Luis was the leading offensive player, the star of the day was the goalie, Jose Villalta, who made save after save. Port St. Lucie High School culinary arts students Krista Ventola, right, and Kendrick Quintao and their classmates recently celebrated and served lunch to faculty with students and teachers who had the highest attendance on campus. The culinary students prepared spicy Italian chicken, homemade macaroni and cheese, yummy green beans and several other tasty dishes. To top it off, culinary instructor Chef Peter Suneson and culinary students served mouth watering desserts such as warm apple pie, lemon bars, and pumpkin pie.

Students in Melanie Francisco’s kindergarten class at Frances K. Sweet Elementary School enjoyed sorting and graphing during a recent math lesson. Pictured, Carmela Bustamante, left, and Jaden Jones had fun sorting, counting, and graphing a popular candy. The whole class was surprised to see that orange and blue occurred the most, and green occurred less.

Students in Eleanor Baker’s third grade class at Frances K. Sweet Elementary proudly display their North American country projects. Students created maps, timelines, brochures, and postcards after they researched and wrote about important events, people, and places of their chosen country.

Mariposa Elementary music teacher Mary McCartney received a $5,000 grant from Lowe’s Toolbox for Education. This grant will be used to create an outdoor amphitheater to be used by teachers and parents to enjoy student generated performances of all kinds. The staff, PTO and chorus members will collaborate in the design and building of the amphitheater.

Students in Rosanna Oswiecinski’s kindergarten class at Parkway Elementary had a special visitor during Literacy Week. Lance Corporal Kyle Lancaster of the U.S. Marines stationed in 29 Palms, California, returned from Afghanistan about a month ago. Students enjoyed Lance Corporal’s reading of “The American Flag” by Patricia Ryan Quirt. Afterward, students wrote about why they are proud to be an American.

Third grade Parkway Elementary student Caitia Oge won first place in the elementary school category for the Martin Luther King, Jr., oratorical contest held at Lincoln Park Academy recently. Caitia captivated the audience with an inspiring speech worthy of first place honors.

Seven Fort Pierce Central High School football players signed letters of intent on National Signing Day to play football. Northport K-8 School lower school students recently participated in the traditional Jump Rope For Heart during physical education class. Students donated nickels, dimes and even dollars to assist in the fight against heart disease. The day was beautiful and very conducive to enjoying time outside jumping rope for an excellent cause. Each year, Northport coaches Linda Walker, Kim Kanada Graff, Kevin Fess, James Hebb, Ryan Carpenter and Daryn Ploeckelman promote the activity to benefit the American Heart Association. Four Port St. Lucie High School medical academy students in the Health Occupations Students of America organization placed in regional competition and have advanced to state competition to be held April 4-7 in Orlando. Windmill Point fifth grade students investigated the St. Lucie River’s ecosystem on the River Lilly Eco Boat Cruise. They enjoyed seeing the river that is so wild it was used in the James Bond film “Moonraker” to represent a tributary of the Amazon. It is on the same waters used by early settlers and Native Americans. Pictured are students from Laura Young’s class who enjoyed seeing alligators, turtles and lots of native birds.
