West Gate K-8 sponsored the first Autism Walk on the Treasure Coast, Saturday April 27th in Tradition Square. The walk was held to increase public awareness of the needs of autistic children and to raise money for autism research. It was a huge sucess, with over 450 people attending the walk. Over 40 community agencies and local businesses supported and contributed to the walk. Thanks to all the walkers and sponsers, $31,000 dollars was raised for Autism Speaks.

Fort Pierce Central High School ROTC cadets presented the National Colors at the St. Lucie County Republican Party’s annual Lincoln Day Dinner recently in Port St. Lucie, where U.S. Senator Marco Rubio was the keynote speaker. The Port St. Lucie High School JROTC Air Rifle team wong first place at the American Legion Post 318 Invitational Air Rifle Match. Six four-person teams from three schools, including Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce Central, and Fort Pierce Westwood high schools competed for medals in each of the three positions: prone, standing, and kneeling. Port St. Lucie High’s Michael Hutchison scored the highest in the competition. Students and parents from Northport K-8 School participated in the Family Reading Festival held recently at Mets stadium, sponsored by the St. Lucie County Reading Council. The event was a wonderful and authentic testament to the entire school community, and the sharing of literary ideas, and reading and writing possibilities. Some of the events available for families were “Read To A VIP,” Reader’s Theater stage, many authors to visit, Mother Goose Storytime, Scholastic Book Fair, Gently Used book exchange and a Manga drawing contest. Pictured is Northport student Canon LeJeune, who entered a piece of his artwork in the contest.

Officers with the St. Lucie County Fire Department displayed and explained the use of the department’s Air Rescue helicopter to students in Mary Higgins’ First Responder class in the Medical Academy at St. Lucie West Centennial High School during a recent visit to the fire department’s headquarters. In addition to the presentation, students also experienced a one hour practical component with the aircraft. Fairlawn Elementary School’s PTO donated 60 shirts to students in Shirley Helton’s fifth grade class to send to troops stationed in Afghanistan. The students have been sending “goodie boxes” to the troops all year long as part of their “Treats for Troops” project. Northport K-8 School administration, faculty, staff, parents and students participated in a very meaningful way at this year’s Relay For Life 2013! Students from Lorri Rudzinski’s second grade class Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition shared their POINT OF VIEW with Superintendent Michael Lannon during a recent visit to the school. Students responded to the school district’s request for public input about what characteristics they thought the new superintendent should possess, as Mr. Lannon retires at the end of June. Third grade students at Allapattah Flats K8 School are excited about physical attributes! During a review activity students had to reach their hand into a box and describe the object inside using only adjectives. Items included a hair barrette, kaleidoscope and doll shoe. It was determined that all three objects could be identified with 80% accuracy. Three teams from Lincoln Park Academy and one team from Port St. Lucie High School have advanced to the 2013 Odyssey of the Mind World Competition in Lansing, Michigan, next month. The three Lincoln Park teams earned first place in state competition, a first for any school or individual coach. The team from Port St. Lucie High earned second place in state competition in only its second year of competition. Treasure Coast High School (TCHS) Air Force ROTC students prepare to embark on another Street Cleaning Mission to keep St. Lucie Beautiful. Beginning in 2008, each month approximately 12 students pick up trash from Port St. Lucie Blvd to Tulip along Darwin, for one mile through the “Adopt-A-Road” program. Under the leadership of Lt Col. Cavallaro and SMSgt. Simmons, these students’ service usually equate to over 200 hours of voluntarism annually. The TCHS Community is very proud of its commitment to service as well as the mission to create well rounded citizens who provide leadership and service to their community.

Community members came out to Allapattah Flats K8 School recently to share their love of reading with kindergarten through fourth grade students who were fortunate to see members of local law enforcement, school district officials, and even some familiar retirees at this event. Second grade students at Allapattah Flats K8 School recently had the opportunity to visit the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center in Stuart. Students enjoyed learning about the many unique coastal treasures that are showcased at the center. Students were able to touch a variety of sea animals including stingrays, horseshoe crabs, sea stars, and sea urchins and saw lagoon fish, sea turtles, and even a nurse shark! They are looking forward to hopefully returning back to the center with their families during the summer.
