When playing with your food is finally acceptable because you’re modeling scientific information! Ms. Jordan’s 8th-grade classroom (with the assistance of Mr. Tygesson) participated in a lunar phase lab (demonstrating the 8 phases of the moon using Oreos).
Ms. Jordan and Mr. Tygesson co-taught a density lab to Ms. Jordan’s 8th-grade science class. Students learned that density is the relationship between mass, volume, density, and flotation. It explains why some objects float while other objects sink. The density of any material can be determined by dividing the material’s mass by its volume. Standard: SC.8.P.8.3 Explore and describe the densities of various materials through measurement of their masses and volumes. Big Idea: Properties of Matter – A. All objects and substances in the world are made of matter. Matter has two fundamental properties: matter takes up space and matter … Read More
Our 8th-grade students were able to put into practice what they learned regarding the Earth’s rotation on its axis and orbiting the Sun. The students were able to create a sundial with plates, bendy straws, a template of the sundial, and a compass. The students could experience and explain how the sun shining down on the straw created a shadow on the sundial. The sundial simply labels each hour that goes by as the Earth rotates. Students were able to discuss how it appears that the sun is moving across the sky, but it is really Earth that is rotating! … Read More
