Garber Buick GMC Donates Check to PSLHS

Port St. Lucie High School Principal Adrian Ocampo graciously accepted a check for $4,820 at the June School Board meeting from Garber Buick GMC — a local partner in education.  Mrs. Sheila Cash, Garber’s office administrator, presented the check as a result of the school participating in the dealership’s Drive for Education fundraising campaign. For each 2-3 minute Test Drive, Buick donated $10.00.  When the event exceeded 100 test drives, Buick doubled the donation to $20.00. Game On: SPMS Gears Up for District Test with a Fun Review.

At Southport Middle School, students enrolled in seventh grade accelerated math prepared for their first district test by participating in a fun and engaging review game held in the Media Center. Led by math coach Mr. Mirc, who served as the game’s energetic host, students reviewed key skills and concepts they’ve learned so far this year. The activity fostered a lively, competitive atmosphere that helped reinforce learning while keeping students motivated. Game On for Academic Success at Palm Pointe K-8

Palm Pointe 6th graders participated in an IXL Leaderboard Math contest for about two weeks, measuring the “most correct questions” during that time period. “Gallon pals” arrive at Windmill Point!

Windmill Point Elementary second graders in Caryol-Lynn Hallahan’s class created their own “gallon pals” to help them learn capacity and equivalents in math. Each student made their own pal beginning with a gallon body, accompanied by quart arms and legs, pint hands and feet, and cup fingers and toes to help them visualize how our customary system of measurement works. Gaines’ Turtle Rehab

Students in Ms. Blackburn’s 6th grade Science Resource class are learning about turtles, their habitats, and threats against them. The photo shows students measuring and weighing their turtles to see if they need to be brought in for rehabilitation. Students got to use the same equipment that marine biologists use on the turtles and loved doing it. This great hands-on activity is through the Traveling Trunk Program.

Gaines’ Tadpole Learners

The students in the self-contained unit are reading books and collectively raising tadpoles. They are interacting with the various texts and learning by doing. The most recent lesson focused on students creating their own life cycles. The class can not wait to see the baby frogs!  

Gaines Super Hero Scientists

Gaines Academy Vice Principal Alex “Batman” Oge exciting the 5th grade students about the science expo and plans to make them Super Hero Scientists. For the next four weeks the students will have guest scientists conducting hands-on experiments and all fifth grade students will attend a science resource class each day. Gaines Academy is Powered Up about science!

Gaines Student to Compete at State Level

Join us in congratulating Janessa Diaz for being one of the District Science Fair Finalist. Her prototype for a wind turbine will be moving on to the Middle School Engineering division of the state competition. She created a way to measure the efficiency of the turbine by using a pulley system and measured the results of the efficiency of the wind turbine daily to keep records of how the turbine performed. Gaines Stop & STEM Day

At Samuel Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies, early release means “Stop and STEM Day”, where ALL students look forward to participating in fun STEM activities. This month’s theme was ESCAPE ROOMS. Each grade level was given escape room materials that were designed specifically for the students to be successful, yet required problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Ms. La Bare’s students loved being included in solving problems, puzzles, riddles, and codes to discover the pirates lost treasure! To top it off, the students made pirate hats and eye patches to get into the spirit of the day.

Gaines Kindergarteners Celebrate Reading Goal

Gaines’ “Kinder” Giants

Kindergarten Colts were real Scientists as they used magnifying glasses to observe the world around them. Then, they recorded their observations. By the end of the day, our littlest Colts felt like giants looking through the magnifying lens!                                        

Gaines GEER Tutoring

Over the past few months, Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies was part of the district wide GEER Reading after school tutoring program. This program supported over 40 of our students on Monday-Friday afternoons. Our highly effective teachers: Ms. Brooks, Ms. M. Matos, Ms. Cordero, Ms. Young, Ms. Luna, Ms. Capre, Ms. Moore, Ms. Gleason, Ms. A, Matos, and Ms. Paul all supported our students at their individual reading levels and provided differentiated instruction with small class sizes. Gaines Academy was recognized by the American Reading Company for their 100 Book Challenge Reading program. Students reading levels increased on average 1.47 years during the 2014-15 school year. Believe in GAINS at Gaines!

Gaines essay contest winners recognized at school board meeting

The winners of the fifth annual Dr. Samuel S. Gaines essay contest were recognized at the May 28, 2013, St. Lucie County School Board meeting. The contest, sponsored since its inception by The Morganti Group which provides cash prizes for the winning entries, is part of the district’s recognition and celebration of African American history month. Local students in grades three to 12 may write an essay describing an African American person in St. Lucie County who has made a difference in the student’s life, explaining what the person did to make such an impact. Gaines Butterfly Release

Happy Spring! Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies fourth-graders found caterpillars for the kindergarten students and we have all enjoyed watching them grow into big caterpillars, become a chrysalis, and emerge as a butterfly. Kindergarten students recently released their last butterfly.

Gaines AVID @ Staple Center

On Saturday, November 5th, Gaines Academy AVID students went to the Amway Center, where they spent the day hearing speakers who participated in the AVID program through high school and how AVID prepared them for college and their current roles with the Orlando Magic. In addition to these speakers, co-founder and Magic Executive Pat Williams took the time to speak and answer questions for the students. Gaines’ AVID Program

SGAET AVID students are practicing their verbal communication skills by describing an unknown image to their partner. Partners are working on active listening and asking specific, clarifying questions in order to produce accurate results. Groups were able to reflect on any barriers to communication and improve their accuracy at recreating the provided images with each new attempt. Students also became more comfortable asking specific questions when they were confused, as well as attempting multiple different descriptions in order to connect with their partners. Gaines Academy Welcomes Dads

On September 27th, SGA had a wonderful time celebrating fathers and caring adults who change the lives of our students everyday.  The morning started with an instrumental interlude by SGA music teacher Mr. Pena and students along with photo booth opportunities.  After a brief presentation and breakfast, the fathers and caring adults were eager to pledge to be more involved in their children’s education.

Gaines Academy Turkey Bowl

Awesome! Fantastic! Fun! Just some of the adjectives used to describe the Gaines Academy First Annual Turkey Bowl. Thursday evening’s night of family fun featured games, arts and crafts, face painting, cake walks, relay races, cheerleading instructions, and a Scholastic Book Fair. All of this took place while guests were serenaded by the impressive SGA Band. The featured event of the evening was a chance to win a turkey. Gaines Academy thanks business partner for support

A special thank you to Jed Garbie from Samuel S. Gaines academy business partner Sonic restaurant for the 2011-2012 school year.  Sonic has donated a variety of coupons for free or discounted items from their menu.  The coupons were used for COLT of the month, honor roll, and perfect attendance.  They also gave free slush coupons to the class that brought in the most box tops.  The school thanks Sonic for all it does to benefit and encourage Gaines Academy students.
