Thirteen  students from St. Lucie County participated in the recent 57th Annual State Science Fair in Lakeland, the largest academic competition in the State of Florida.  Over 820 students statewide  participated in the event hosted by  the Florida Foundation for Future Scientists (FFFS).  FFFS  is a statewide, non-profit organization authorized by the 1957 Legislature of the State of Florida to discover scientific and technical talent in the schools of Florida and to encourage the pursuit of careers in science and engineering. Students from St. Lucie County participated and received awards/ recognition  in the following categories at the State Science Fair event:  … Read More

As October was International Walk to School Month, students from St. Lucie Public Schools participated October 24th for Walk and Bike Safety Day. Students at Treasure Coast High School recently participated in AT&T’s public awareness campaign about the dangers of texting while driving. Students were able to engage a simulated driving experience of distracted driving and the potential disastrous consequences. Brief videos and print materials were also on hand to provide information to the students. The event was part of AT&T’s nationwide push to save lives and make texting and driving as unacceptable as drinking and driving. Students in culinary arts programs in St. Lucie County high schools had an exciting experience recently. Renowned Johnson and Wales University in Miami presented a Culinary Skills Day for junior and senior students from four local high schools, hosted by St. Lucie West Centennial High School. Students from St. Lucie West Centennial, Fort Pierce Westwood, Port St Lucie and Fort Pierce Central high schools culinary programs participated. 32 middle and high school students from St. Lucie Public Schools competed at the 2013 Florida History Fair in Tallahassee on May 6. All entries were based on this year’s annual theme, “Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events.” Students who placed in either first or second place at the District History Fair held on March 2 were eligible to advance to the state competition. Kaitlyn Deverson, a fifth grade student at Oak Hammock K8 School, came in first in her category at the Braille Challenge, a national program of the Braille Institute® hosted by regional schools and agencies that serve blind and visually impaired children. It is the only national braille literacy competition of its kind in the country, and is specifically designed to challenge and reward blind students for their study of braille, which is essential to their future academic and employment success. Jacqueline Cruz, daughter of Maria Cruz-Zavala and Arturo Cruz of Fort Pierce and sixth grade student at Samuel S. Gaines Academy K-8, was recognized at the October 9, 2012, St. Lucie County School Board meeting. Jacqueline won first place in her age category in the Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs’ (AFOP) 2012 Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker Children Essay Contest. The contest, open to students nationwide ages 10-18 and children of migrant workers, asked students to write about the challenges faced by farmworker families, the typical day of a farmworker, and what motivates the student. LUCIE COUNTY – Ariana White, an eighth grade student at Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition, will serve as a Page for State Representative Gayle Harrell in the upcoming Legislative Delegation session in Tallahassee, March 6-10. The exciting news came in an acceptance letter from Clerk Portia Palmer of the Florida House of Representatives. Dale Cassen Educational Complex (DCEC) student Jesus Dominguez was recognized by the St. Lucie County School Board at its January 14, 2014, business meeting for being honored as the Very Special Arts Florida (VSAFL) November Student of the Month. The VSAFL program is designed to increase public awareness and recognize the impact arts make on students with disabilities statewide. The Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion hosted the annual Treasure Coast Raider Meet at Port Saint Lucie High School recently. Participating schools included Port Saint Lucie High School, Ft. Pierce Central High School, St. Lucie West Centennial High School, Ft. Pierce Westwood High School, Okeechobee High School and Treasure Coast High School. Principal Ucola Barrett-Baxter received the Children’s Hero Award of the Year Award for “Time” from the Eckerd Connects Mission. The third annual awards event recognized local heroes for their dedication to investing Time, Talent, and Treasure to youth and providing them with opportunities for a second chance at a successful life. A group of students from the St.Lucie Schools’ youth golf program competed in the Martin County junior tournament recently. The tournament was held at the Martin County Golf and Country Club in Stuart. Taking first place in their divisions are, from left, Gina Carvelli from Palm Pointe K-8 in the girls 10-12 year old, Cameron Beach from Morningside Elementary in the boys 7-9 year old, and Savannah Hawthorne from Palm Pointe K-8 in the girls 7-9 year old division. Students are shown with their first place medals from the tournament.

Recently McDonald’s on South US #1 in Fort Pierce hosted McTeacher Night for the staff of F.K. Sweet Elementary and donated 15% of the proceeds made between 5 and 7 PM to the school to help defray expenses. Teachers worked the counter, drive through, cooked, packaged, and wiped tables. Stacey Johnson and Cindy Young even tempted the diners with samples of chicken nuggets. It was not only a fun experience, but gave everyone an insight to what goes on in a fast food restaurant.
