The Realtors of the Palm Beaches, Treasure Coast Office (RAPB) and their affiliates heard about a local need and answered the call in a big way! Kylee Fuhr, homeless liaison for St. Lucie Public Schools works with homeless students and networks with local businesses and organizations to garner support. “They (RAPB) asked what we needed and came through in a big way,” said Fuhr. Bookbags, pencils, paper, shirts, slacks, shorts, shoes and more poured in from all areas of the Treasure Coast.
RAPB Treasure Coast Manager of Programs Helen Dempsey said the realtors are involved in numerous facets of the community and appreciate opportunities to serve. “We meet so many people and understand that many times homelessness is situational. It’s great to be able to help families out by assisting with their children’s needs.”
While numbers are still rolling in this year for the District’s homeless rate, Fuhr said that last year there were 1,239 homeless children and youth – those who lack a fixed and adequate nighttime residence. “Add to that, 118 unaccompanied youth who are students identified as not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian, and we have a tremendous need in our community.” She went on to add that while the numbers have grown over the last few years, the awareness is also growing. “Through the support of community groups and municipalities, we can work to help turn this around. Our main concern is that we help keep children in school to provide them with the knowledge, skills, and desire to succeed once they graduate,” she said.
