Students in Ms. Zoie Griffiths’ 5th grade class at Mariposa Elementary learn about controlled experiments. The students completed an investigation that tested how high a ball would bounce on four different surfaces. They learned about variables, the scientific process, and even included some math by finding the average height of the five trials. This will be the first of many experiments and investigations that the students will get to do in 5th grade.

The 5th graders at Mariposa Elementary in Ms. Kathy Guntow’s class are investigating the proper use of scientific tools. The students rotate through stations that measure volume, mass, length, time, and temperature. They also explore how to use microscopes and hand lenses to complete their science measurement tools activity. Toni Serra, Dylan Baugh, and Crystal Headley are cooperatively working with a classroom scale.

More than 70 students and their parents braved inclement weather to attend Mariposa Elementary’s Math Night. Students were engaged in meaningful, real world problem-solving as they walked grocery store aisles. The Kindergarten Team at Mariposa Elementary showed their amazing collaborative planning abilities as they put together an extremely engaging end-of-unit Gingerbread Day. After a week-long unit that involved comparing and contrasting different versions of the Gingerbread Man stories, the students illustrated their own gingerbread characters. The week ended with the students decorating gingerbread cookies and building Gingerbread houses of their own. The fun projects helped bring the stories to life. During the months of April and May, Mariposa students have been writing and publishing their own books as a part of the annual celebration of writers — Young Authors. Students from grades kindergarten to fifth wrote, illustrated, edited, and published original stories. These books were shared and celebrated through several classroom and school-wide activities. Four writers were chosen to represent Mariposa at the Young Authors Celebration. On Unity Day, Mariposa students and staff wore orange to show that they are together against bullying, and united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Kindergartner, Nia Johnson, is pointing out our United for Kindness, Acceptance, and Inclusion Sign. Mariposa students worked on Project Connect which connects orange strips of paper to create a chain. Project Connect joins students, schools, and communities to make a powerful statement about uniting against bullying. The Project Connect chains are showcased in the cafeteria. At Mariposa Elementary, students in grades 2-5 joined in our 100 Mile Club® which was organized by our PE teacher, Mrs. Adriana Roberts. Whether the students ran, jogged, or walked towards their personal goals, the 100 Mile Club® inspired students of all abilities to be active in an accepting, positive, and inclusive environment. Michael Resendiz-Torres, Gabriel Barahona, Yadiel Tavarez and Jaistyn Thurston ran or walked more than 100 miles each.  This year, Mariposa Elementary students walked more than 8,000 miles.  This was a great achievement for all of the students.

Mariposa Elementary celebrated Storybook Character Day. It was a huge success and culminated with a character parade featuring Prekindergarten, Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third grades. Many of our teachers and staff participated as superheroes including our very own Principal R. Craig Logue and Assistant Principal Angela Patton. Pictured Above: R. On November 28, Mariposa Elementary had an assembly to honor men and women who have served and those who are currently serving in the United States Military.  Our students were encouraged to invite a family member or friend who is a Veteran or currently serving to attend this assembly. During the program, a group of Veterans came to speak to the students. Mr. Chad Guess had his Mariposa Marching Band Drumline put on an amazing performance. A dual purpose ceremony was enjoyed at Mariposa Elementary School recently to honor Carl Andor, the St. Lucie County School District Adult Volunteer of the Year nominated by mariposa Elementary, as well as formally dedicate the school’s new outdoor amphitheater which Andor and his son, Logan, built during the summer with materials from Lowe’s purchased with a grant from the school’s music teacher Mary McCartney. During the ceremony, students sang a song written by Ms. McCartney for Mr. Andor’s efforts. Pictured are the celebrants.

In celebration of National Book Month, Mariposa Elementary is implementing Get Caught Reading! The incentive program encourages our students to pick up a book and read during their spare time. They are recognized with a ticket, which is then dropped in a box. Names are pulled every Friday for great books and prizes!  Congratulations to our first group of students who Got Caught Reading! Angeliz Ocasio (5th grade), Noah Teague (4th grade), and Tristan Di Salvo (4th grade) are some of the lucky ones who were chosen to win more books and prizes.

Mariposa Elementary is acknowledging student success in Mr. Evans’ class by celebrating Music in our Schools Month. Students are passionately demonstrating their musical skill sets for their teachers, classmates, and families by sharing songs and activities they learned in music class. Students in upper grades share how their younger siblings are singing catchy songs nonstop at home. Meanwhile, some K-2 students are gaining a head-start in the music curriculum through older siblings sharing their wealth of musical knowledge. To celebrate literacy, some of Mariposa Elementary’s 4th and 5th graders participated in a scavenger hunt during the book fair. The hunt comprised of finding historical fiction books, graphic novels, authors with the same letter as their own name, friendship books, and many more finds. Gianni Filippini and Lauren Rocha are seen here recording their answers for the hunt. The top students to complete the scavenger hunt received a prize of their choice from the book fair.  

Mariposa Elementary celebrated literacy with a reading night at Barnes and Noble. The Barnes and Noble evening was a huge success with so many of our family and students participating. Thank you to all who came, supported, and participated that evening. Mrs. Whitaker read two stories and the children were very involved and excited to experience their first read-aloud with their new principal. She was amazing reading “Gustavo the Shy Ghost” by Flavia Drago and “You Matter” by Christian Robinson. A fourth grade student at Mariposa Elementray, Mateo Villegas, was celebrated for receiving a perfect score on his 3rd grade math FSA test. Mr. Logue and all of the administration and staff at Mariposa are extremely proud of his accomplishment!

Mariposa Elementary celebrated “Empowerment” which is a Social and Emotional Learning theme. At Mariposa Elementary’s book fair, many students benefited from a special donation from two brothers, Antonio Delatorre and Alejandro Delatorre. The brothers each donated $10 along with a letter they individually wrote indicating that they would like the money to benefit students who cannot afford a book. It was a very special donation indeed and many students went home with books because of their generous donation! Also, the book fair hosted a “Books and Bubbly” event for teachers and staff. In celebration of Music in Our Schools Month, Mr. Chad Guess took a group of Mariposa students to the All County Chorus which was held at Lincoln Park Academy.  Radley Yackamouih, Alexis Whyms, Karina Arocho, Nathalie Carrion, Szofi Viskolcz, and Celeste Swanson sang with students from other St. Lucie Public Schools during the annual All County Chorus event.

Mariposa Elementary 4th and 5th graders had their special Writing Days. 4th Grade had a Writing Carnival and 5th grade had a Surgery Day. Each station had students dissecting texts, writing elaborations, citing evidence, and much more! It was a great day for learning!
