Mariposa Elementary kindergartners get lesson in dental health

Kindergartners at Mariposa Elementary enjoyed a hands-on presentation about how to care for their teeth. They were shown the importance of flossing and the correct way to floss, discussed foods that make their teeth happy and foods that make their teeth sad. They also were shown how to brush their teeth properly to make sure they removed the plaque. Every student left with a tooth brushing kit that included all the tools they needed to ensure successful brushing. Mariposa Elementary kindergartners create shape monsters

Kindergartners in Linda Auciello’s class at Mariposa Elementary used their new knowledge of shapes to create some crazy shape monsters. They were given a brief discussion and example, but then they were required to cut the paper into the shapes by themselves and put the shapes together to form some sort of crazy monster! Mariposa Elementary kindergartners are sight word wizards

Students in Linda Auciello’s kindergarten class at Mariposa Elementary know how to write and read 100 sight words by the 100th day! They used their word knowledge to create a massive poster of the sight words they have learned and they also wrote their own smaller sized list of the same words. This is turning into a classroom full of sight word wizards!

Mariposa Elementary Kindergarten, First, & Second Grade Students Visited Their Future Grade Level Classrooms

At Mariposa Elementary, Mrs. Ryan’s Kindergarten class visited Mrs. Lantaigne’s first-grade classroom. They practiced first-grade skills and discussed with the current first-graders what they enjoyed most about being first-graders. Then, Mrs. Lantaigne’s first-graders visited Ms. Watson’s second-grade class. They had a great time playing a math game and learning what to expect! This was a wonderful way to ease the transition into the next grade level and the students really enjoyed meeting the first and second-grade teachers.  

Mariposa Elementary In-School Field Trip for First Graders

Mariposa first graders had an awesome ”in-school field trip!” They learned about the rainforest  and the many plants and animals that live there. The students even learned about all the foods and products they use at home that originate in the rainforest. If you’d ask our students their favorite part, their answers would vary.  Some would say they loved using the animal puppets, others enjoyed hearing the story of The Great Kapok Tree while adding their animal to the Velcro rainforest, but most students would say they loved touching the real rainforest snake. Mariposa Elementary hosts FCAT/SAT information night

Mariposa Elementary School recently held its FCAT / SAT Information Night for parents. To start the night, everyone enjoyed a chicken, mashed potato and gravy dinner. After dinner, parents learned more about their children’s upcoming standardized tests and how they could help them at home. Teachers also shared reading tips and strategies with the families during grade-specific breakout sessions. At the end of the night, everyone had an ice cream sundae! Mariposa Elementary Heroes Day

Superintendent of Schools, Genelle Yost, and Executive Director of Schools, Pam Dampier, visit Mariposa just in time to join the Heroes Breakfast!  Heroes Breakfast is a special recognition of our veterans and community helpers that help keep us safe at school and at home.  Teacher, Mrs. Michelle Smith, coordinated the Heroes Breakfast program this year, where students read poems that they had written thanking our veterans for keeping us safe!

Mariposa Elementary has workshop for parents

Mariposa Elementary School recently held its third Read to Succeed Night. To begin the night, third grade families participated in a workshop that provided them with tips and strategies that would help them better prepare their children for the upcoming FCAT tests. After the workshop, everyone played Word Bingo, with winners receiving books as prizes. No one went home empty-handed! To cap the evening, refreshments were served to all. Mariposa Elementary has event to raise funds for field trip

Mariposa Elementary School recently held its Spirit Night at Chick-Fil-A of the Treasure Coast Mall. Chick-Fil-A helped the third grade team raise funds for their upcoming field trip to Legoland. Thank you to Mr. Kiedis of Chick-Fil-A and to all the families who came out and supported the event. Mariposa Elementary fourth grade students prepare for wax museum

Fourth grade students at Mariposa Elementary School are preparing for the school’s annual wax museum.  The students are excited and eager to teach other students and visitors about their famous person in history and how that person made a positive impact in our society and the world. Mariposa Elementary Fourth Grade “Rocks” the FSA

At Mariposa Elementary, several people donated rocks to encourage and inspire Ms. Erica Morales’ students to do well on their Math FSA. She hid the rocks around her classroom the day of the Math FSA. The students were surprised and went on a rock hunt. They had a blast!  The rocks were meant to inspire the students to do their best. Mariposa Elementary fosters young authors

Miguel Juarez in Ami Jobson’s first grade class at Mariposa Elementary School made a hardcover book titled “Alligators”.  His book is divided into sections: Table of Contents, Meet the Author and alligator facts. To honor Miguel for his hard work, Mariposa’s broadcasting station, Wings TV, invited him on the show as their special guest. His book was televised for the whole school to see.

Mariposa Elementary First Grader Refused to Give Up!

At Mariposa Elementary, Mrs. Linda Auciello’s 1st grade class was working on counting on and writing their numbers through 30. Student Tyler Rubenstein took this request to an ultimate level and counted all the way through the number 120. It took him five white boards to write them, but he was determined to show what he knew and refused to give up!

Mariposa Elementary first grade students tour a fire station

  Mariposa Elementary School first grade students went on a field trip to Fire Rescue Station 13 for a fire safety presentation.  The students learned important lifesaving tips and fun facts about firefighters.  After the presentation the students got an inside look at a fire engine, toured the firefighters’ living quarters, and even got to try on a firefighter’s jacket.   

Mariposa Elementary first grade students become authors

At Mariposa Elementary, first grade students in Ami Jobson’s class are authors!  Each student recently chose an animal to research before the class field trip to the Palm Beach Zoo.  The students researched habitat, eating habits, offspring and what each animal looks like.  The students worked hard to report detailed, accurate facts and the outcome was amazing! Parents were then invited to school for an animal presentation and to celebrate their child’s accomplishment.

Mariposa Elementary First Grade Reading Centers

The students favorite is the listening center where they get to listen to a great book and then draw and write to tell about their favorite part of the story or their favorite characters.  

Mariposa Elementary First Grade Parent Organizes Activity

Lisa Delatorre came up with a fun project for Mrs. Auciello’s 1st grade class! She brought the supplies for the students to create and use a drawing robot, or “doodle bot.” The students had a blast putting these together and watching the cool designs they could make! Mariposa Elementary Fifth Graders Study Native Americans

Students in Mrs. Saunders’ 5th grade present Native American Projects.  Fifth graders enjoyed presenting Native American projects. As part of their Reading and Social Studies standards, each student researched a tribe, wrote about the culture, then created a board or diorama reflecting the unique attributes they discovered.  Pictured: Zachary Cobb, Jonah McCrory, and Victoria Serrano Melendez.  

Mariposa Elementary Fifth Graders Investigate

Students in Ms. Zoie Griffiths’ 5th grade class at Mariposa Elementary learn about controlled experiments. The students completed an investigation that tested how high a ball would bounce on four different surfaces. They learned about variables, the scientific process, and even included some math by finding the average height of the five trials. This will be the first of many experiments and investigations that the students will get to do in 5th grade.

Mariposa Elementary Fifth Graders are Wild for Science

The 5th graders at Mariposa Elementary in Ms. Kathy Guntow’s class are investigating the proper use of scientific tools. The students rotate through stations that measure volume, mass, length, time, and temperature. They also explore how to use microscopes and hand lenses to complete their science measurement tools activity. Toni Serra, Dylan Baugh, and Crystal Headley are cooperatively working with a classroom scale.
