It was the pleasure of the Northport administration, teachers, and staff to host our monthly Speakers Bureau in partnership with Dr. Donna Mills, SLPS School Board Member recently. Each month, Northport along with several other schools, hosts guest speakers who encourage and motivate students to pull themselves up by the boot straps, make good choices, use positive role models and learn to find their passion and purpose in life. Northport Hosts Living Legend and American Hero!

Northport K-8 School students have been working diligently this year with teachers, veterans, Gold Star Families and Mrs. Gruszka in the Media Center to educate each other, their families and the community about the Medal of Honor, Gold Star Families and World War II. The learning experiences included Gold Star mothers, Karen Zook and Linda Schuman interacting with kids from grades three through eight about service, sacrifice, integrity, commitment and then teaching others about these ideals. Northport Hosts Inwater Research Group

Marine biologists, Mr. and Mrs. Mott from the Inwater Research Group, presented a stimulating enrichment program to the 6th-8th grade Northstar students about sea turtles. They showed specimens of turtle anatomy and related body structures to their function for survival in the ecosystem. Students considered characteristics of organisms as they identified the shared characteristics used for taxonomic classification of organisms. Students were encouraged to think about the impact humans have on the environment and share their ideas. Northport Hosts first Leadership Summit

Northport K-8 School Media Center has developed and initiated a brand new program at the school that teaches and promotes leadership skills and training through a program called “Northport Leadership Summit.”. The Northport “Leadership Summit” will be held monthly and will showcase and spotlight community leaders. Northport Hosts Community Leaders to Lead on Stress Response!

Northport Northstar students hosted Port St. Lucie Mayor, Greg Oravec and Major Chris Cicio, Director of Detention for the Sheriff’s Department, in the media center recently. Both men initiated conversations with students about how they handle stress. In order for young people to achieve their potential, we need to recognize that social and emotional learning is a critical element in the educational process. Northport Honors September as Sickle Cell Awareness Month

Northport K-8 School honors and supports all who are fighting the courageous battle against Sickle Cell Disease this month. Awareness as a school community is being raised by instructor, Marie Solide whose daughter Kookie died of Sickle Cell Anemia very recently. On October 8, Northport community will wear red clothing and donate to the cause by purchasing bracelets in honor of the many lives lost. Northport honors Presidents Day

Northport K-8 administration, instructors, staff and students commemorate Presidents Day on February 20 by honoring all 44 American presidents. Students are learning information about George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and are celebrating the lives and contributions of US presidents.  It is vital that students remember the history of the country, remember the names of those who worked to make America the most vital country on Earth and the bravery that it takes to be America’s president.  Northport K-8 marks the days in February to celebrate great American leaders.  Pictured is a variety of Northport seventh and eighth grade students.

Northport Honored to be on the Missions List for FUMC

Northport is thankful for the love and care offered to students and teachers from the First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie. The church congregation has embraced this Title One school as a mission. Students and teachers are blessed to be the recipients of lunches and breakfasts on teacher planning days and workdays, donations of over 100 fully loaded bookbags, supplies and so much more. The Navigators are thrilled to have so many this organization’s members in place as classroom tutors and adoptive grandparents.

Northport History Fair Students Return as Champs!

On behalf of Northport K8, We would like to congratulate the following students for their placement at the St. Lucie County History Fair competition. Jennifer Lugo-Rodriguez and Chastine Maharaj received 3rd place for Junior Group website. Rebebak Papsidero and Lily Swantic received 2nd place for Junior Group Exhibit. Arthur Sanders received 1st place for Junior Individual Documentary and was awarded a new laptop from Walmart Distribution Center for having an outstanding entry in the technology category. Northport garden wins fair accolades

Northport K-8 fifth grade instructor Judy Fowler and her students won accolades, money and ribbons of all colors at the St. Lucie County Fair for vegetables home grown in the class’ garden and for journals that students submitted. Students exhibited vegetables such as kohlrabi, cabbage, peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, basil, dill, mustards, collards, onions and strawberries. Northport fourth graders hone journalistic skills

Northport K-8 School fourth graders in Carissa Berkley’s RTI or Response To Intervention class are using their higher level thinking skills to compile articles researched online, compose questions and use talking and listening skills to interview campus administrators, teachers and staff, write book reviews, research and write directions on “how-to” projects such as “How To Build a Bird House,” write articles about clubs and activities that are occurring at Northport and to incorporate research into articles on bullying and cyberbullying, as well as making cartoons and puzzles for fourth graders to enjoy as an addition to the newsletter. Northport first graders receive visit from Florida forestry service

Northport K-8 first grade students in Rachel Ellsworth, Laura Poveromo, Pam Mishler, Dulce Olivera, Michelle McCloskey and Christine Santos-Nurse’s classes received a very special visit from Smoky the Bear and Forest Ranger Bolduc recently to talk about the dangers of forest fires. The rangers read a special story about Smokey the Bear, showed the students the equipment and clothing worn by the rangers during a forest fire and even brought  their heavy equipment for students to peruse in the front of the school. Rangers talked about who to call if a student sees smoke, what to do if matches are found and … Read More

Northport first graders receive visit from community helper

Northport K-8 first grade students in Laura Poveromo, Dulce Olivera and Christine Santos-Nurse’s classes recieved a visit from Officer Daniel Smith of the Fort Pierce Police Department. Students sat in a group in the outdoor garden area and had a lengthy conversation with Officer Smith, who spoke to the students about how to keep themselves safe when playing outside and to make sure to keep their porch lights on and doors locked to help prevent break ins. He also spoke about the importance of laws and equated laws to school rules. Officer Smith also explained all the tools and equipment that he … Read More

Northport first graders participate in grand celebration

First grade students in Rachel Ellsworth’s class at Northport K8 School recently participated in a grand celebration of Young Author’s books, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Parents and grandparents were excited to participate with their young students in a day of sharing by partnering with students in the classroom to read Young Author books.  Students then performed two reader’s theater productions titled, “Mom:  Every Day Is Mother’s Day” and “Hats Off To Dad!”  Students had a wonderful opportunity to talk about their accomplishments and demonstrated an intensity and lively pace that both students and families throughly enjoyed! Northport fifth graders prepare winter garden

Northport K-8 students in Judy Fowler’s fifth grade class are preparing their annual winter garden this year with the help of a group of interested parents. During the next few months, students will learn to care for their plants by weeding, fertilizing, aerating the soil and spraying for insects. Students will also learn to use various weather instruments such as thermometers, hygrometers and rain guages. Some of the plants students are planting and tending are swiss chard, kohlrabi, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage and strawberries. Students will exhibit their garden journal, their produce and gardening projects at the Saint Lucie County Fair in February. Pictured, from … Read More
