Virtual CAST Leader of the Month

CAST hosted its premier virtual Leader of the Month ceremony to recognize students nominated for exhibiting the leadership trait of being “balanced,” part of Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw. Though we weren’t able to meet in person, we organized a ceremony in our virtual auditorium which included a musical performance by one of our students and each leader was individually recognized by Dr. Reid. Certificates were also mailed home. Congratulations again to all of our Leaders of the Month!

PBIS Fun Friday Kahoot at CAST

Middle school students at CAST look forward to their weekly community-building activity with their teachers and administrators, Fun Friday Kahoot! After a week of hard work in their distance learning classes, students face off against their peers and their favorite teachers each Friday to earn the title of Kahoot champion. Questions cover a wide variety of academic areas, as well as some fun pop culture trivia and our Leader in Me curriculum. A special grand prize is dropped off at the weekly winner’s doorstep.

Free Community Wi-Fi for Students! SLPS has parked buses at the following locations. The buses are serving as “Wi-Fi Hotspots” so that students can engage in Distance Learning. District issued laptops will connect automatically when in range. Cell phones can connect to “SLPS-BYOD” network.

West Gate K-8 Sends Flat Teachers

In true “Flat Stanley” style, several kindergarten and first grade teachers sent their students ‘Flat Teachers’. This creative gesture was an effort to reach their kids and not only remind them they are thinking of them daily, but also to inspire their students to share their quarantined adventures with their ‘flat teacher’. Students can share their adventures through Canvas, Remind, FlipGrid, and Teams. Mrs. Buehrig, Mrs. Downing, Mrs. Godoy, Mrs. Smith, Ms. Miller, Ms. Harris, and Ms. Jines are all looking forward to the many adventures and stories to come.

Morningside Elementary School Makes Virtual Learning Fun

The students in Mr. Bevacqua’s fifth grade class at Morningside Elementary School engage in a lesson on measurement.  Mr. B, as the students call him, shows off his cooking skills and provides the students with safety tips as he makes one of his favorite dishes, Pico de Gallo.  Way to go Mr. Bevacqua for being creative and sharing your talents virtually with the students in the class!  

Village Green Celebrates Virtual Learners!

Village Green Environmental Studies School would like to congratulate the first recipients of their Digital Manatee of the Week award. This new award will be given each week to recognize the students who continually exhibit the traits of Responsibility, Communication and Effort towards their virtual learning. Village Green looks forward to the continued success of all students during these difficult times.  

4th Grade Mariners Earn Incentives While Working Virtually

Weatherbee 4th grade teacher, Klay Robbins, recently mailed a letter to each of his students to check on their progress in Math, Science, and i-Ready. He included “necklace money” in the correspondence – the classroom currency his students can earn and trade for a variety of beaded necklaces. Many students wrote back and one student, Eduardo, included his photo –  he was thrilled to be earning his ‘necklace money” even as he worked virtually!  

Northport Science Lesson Rocks!

Mrs. Tredor’s 5th grade gifted class had a special visitor today in their weekly Science Teams meeting. Mr. Tyler Earll, a Patient Care Technician (PCT) and EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) at Cleveland Clinic stopped in to answer student questions about the body system they had been studying prior to Spring Break. Northport STEM Program Heats Up!

Online Learning is Heating Up! Northstars’ STEM teacher, Kevin Fess, would love for his students to be at Northport creating their own Geothermal Energy projects. However, he is not letting distance hinder the learning process! Sixth-grade students joined Mr. Fess virtually in his kitchen for a live demonstration showing how heat from the earth’s core can help power generators.

West Gate K-8: Ms. Faniel’s Class Parade

Second grade teacher, Ms. Faniel, coordinated a class parade so she could have a brief face-to-face interaction with her students. Parents of her class lined up at the school and were escorted by PSLPD for a quick drive-through parade by Ms. Faniel’s home. Students and parents remained in their cars to maintain a safe distance while still getting to see their teacher! Student Collaboration to Save Our Planet!

Mrs. Lankow’s wonderful Mosaic Digital Academy elementary students honored Earth Day this past week!  After meeting virtually to discuss ideas and brainstorming, students created shared slides for classmates to collaborate on ideas to save our planet Earth! TEAMS is Vibrant Conference Locale for Northport

Principal Rustay joined the 7th-grade Stingrays planning last week. The Stingrays are nearly at capacity with check-ins and attendance. The team is organized for maximum Virtual Learning. The teachers are hard at work and have their students online and checking in daily. Northport Students Share Young Authors in TEAMS!

What a wonderful experience! Darryen Noel from Mrs. Wilson’s class called Mrs. Gruszka, Northport Media Specialist and Young Authors Program Coordinator on TEAMS recently. They discussed his Young Author’s book and how much he is enjoying using his imagination and developing his writing skills. His book is titled “Lana and the Hidden Gem.” Lana is the main character. Village Green Celebrates 50 Years of Earth Day

    Students at Village Green Environmental Studies School respect and cherish the Earth so, it was just natural that they celebrate the 50th year anniversary of Earth Day with a spirit week dedicated to saving the Earth. Students had fun each day participating in a different Earth Day theme as a reminder to their commitment to keeping the Earth clean.            

St. Lucie Elementary Teacher Makes Sure Students are Learning from Home

St. Lucie Elementary kindergarten teacher, Talaya Reeves, was able to visit all of her students at home to give them much needed supplies. Mrs. Reeves applied for a grant from General Motors and Donors Choose – the Keep Kids Learning Program. She received a $1,000 gift card to Walmart and was able to gift each of her students with food, games, crafts, and other educational supplies. Way to go, Mrs. Reeves! Thanks for always loving your students!
