Northport Science Lesson Rocks!

Mrs. Tredor’s 5th grade gifted class had a special visitor today in their weekly Science Teams meeting. Mr. Tyler Earll, a Patient Care Technician (PCT) and EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) at Cleveland Clinic stopped in to answer student questions about the body system they had been studying prior to Spring Break. Students had wonderful questions for him, such as “What color is our blood really?” and “How do they tell what blood type you are?” They were also curious to know why medical professionals need to take so many viles of your blood when we can tell so much from just one small drop. Other topics included how PCTs work hand in hand with pharmacists to ensure patients are given the proper dosages of medication, and how the metric system, which they are currently studying, is used in the medical field daily.
Mr. Earll also discussed what an EMT and PCT does in a hospital setting, including lots of grunt work for doctors and nurses. He is currently in school to become a nurse himself, and is also working on his classes through distance learning just like they are!
