On Monday, January 16, Fort Pierce Westwood JROTC Battalion participated in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade in Fort Pierce, Florida. The Panther Color Guard also presented the national colors as they marched down Martin Luther King Blvd. A mass formation of cadets followed behind the Color Guard. They marched and shouted cadences exciting the crowd around them. Many Fort Pierce Westwood alumni and children shouted positive comments while the cadets marched. Ft Pierce Westwood Panther Battalion places third in the physical training (PT) test during in the recent Area III Raiders Competition at Southfork High School. It was a grueling comeptiton consisting of an academic exam, a first aid exam, a physical training test (measuring endurance and physical fitness), a three mile run, and a 1 1/2 run with a litter weighing 80 pounds. The cadets were up for the challenge, they trained hard daily and gave their all, while having an amazing time.
The Panther Battalion Color Guard was invited to present the colors at the “Lights on After School Event.” The purpose of the event was to inform parents and students about various after school activities in the area. C/SGT Barnhill, C/SGT Scanlan, C/PFC Flores, C/PVT Warner, and C/PVT Clayton all attended the event. Various other organizations were at the event, such as Boy Scouts of America, U.S. National Guard, and Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County. The goal of the program is to get students engaged in after school activities.
Westwood’s Seniors came out in full force this morning to kick off the school year with our beloved annual Senior Sunrise celebration at the beach! It was a proud moment when on Wednesday, December 4th in the presence of over 210 guests, 48 new members were inducted into the Fort Pierce Westwood Academy Chapter of the National Honor Society. New inductees selected members of the faculty who had inspired them to be a part of the ceremony. MOA Students in Geometry Honors are finding the circumcenter of triangles using our 3 county areas – Indian River, St. Lucie, and Okeechobee. Students have to find the equal distance from points they select using maps. This real-world connection makes their learning more relatable and engaging!

Fort Pierce Westwood Academy’s Key Club is already busy with this year’s volunteer activities! Last weekend, several officers and members participated in cleaning up our Adopted Road – Orange Ave – and collected several bags of trash. Cadets from the Fort Pierce Westwood Army JROTC Program volunteered their time to assist with the operations of the Treasure Coast Half and International Triathlon event held at Jaycee Park in Fort Pierce. Our Cadets staffed the water and food stations for the athletes as well as assisted with the teardown of the site. Triathletes that participated in the race had to complete a 1.2-mile swim in the Indian River Lagoon, followed by a 56-mile bicycle ride along A1A, and then ending the race with a 13.1-mile (half marathon) run on A1A. Ft. Pierce Westwood Army JROTC Panther Battalion led their school in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., during the annual MLK parade in Ft Pierce. The 74 Cadets of the battalion were led by Cadet Battalion Commander Maynali Gamez and were accompanied by the color guard, company guidon bearers and an Army High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) from the 1218th Transportation Company of the Florida National Guard. The Westwood Army JROTC Raider Team competed in the Area 3 Regionals Qualifier Raider Meet at the Tanah Keeta Scout Reservation in Jupiter, FL. The team competed against 8 other schools in 5 separate events: (2-Mile Team Run, 1-Mile Cross Country Casualty Evacuation Run, Rope Bridge, Tire Flip, and Kettlebell Relays). Due to a 4th overall finish out of 9 total schools and a Top 3 win in one of the events, our Panther Battalion Cadets will be representing Westwood at the Area 3 Regionals on Saturday, 29 October 22. The Fort Pierce Westwood High School JROTC recently competed in the Academic JLAB competition. JLAB (Junior Leadership and Academic Bowl) is a program within JROTC sponsored by the College Options Foundation. Cadets have the opportunity to improve their ACT/SAT scores, increase interest in college admission, gain leadership skills, and advance hands-on learning. During the JLab competition, the team completed an academic test composed of three sections: verbal, math, and science. Cadets from the Westwood Academy Army JROTC program participated in a Holiday Community Service Project with Peppermint Patti’s Academy & Daycare in Fort Pierce. Our Cadets began preparing for this event three weeks in advance by bringing in new toys and wrapping them. We gave 85 new toys to the children of the daycare, whose ages range from less than a year to 5 years old. Once the kids opened up their new toys, our Cadets spent time playing with the children. Cadets from the Fort Pierce Westwood Academy’s Army JROTC program served as an Honor Guard for the Annual Wreath and Rose Laying Ceremony, sponsored by the Treasure Coast Blue Star Mothers Organization. The event is to honor local Gold Star Families who have lost family members in the line of military duty. Nine JROTC Cadets from Ft Pierce Westwood High School join 76 Cadets from 8 area high schools in Southern Florida in earning the JROTC RECONDO Award. Only 150 Cadets have ever earned this award since its inception. Cadets traveled to Scout Key Florida and over a 4 day training period completed the following training: Rappelling; High COPES Obstacle Course; Swim Test; Snorkeling; Drownproofing; SCUBA; 5 Mile Open Water Kayak Course; 6 Mile Road March; Water Leadership Reaction Course. Major Godfrey, Ms.Benton and Ms. Witkamp joined ‘forces’ to bring Lakewood Park Elementary third graders and the Westwood JrROTC cadets together. Third graders planned for the visit by investigating what makes a good interview and preparing interview questions along with selecting books to ‘buddy read’ with the cadet he/she was paired with during their time together.
