SLC Fair 2014 School Display- Middle/K-8

At the April 8, 2014 School Board Meeting, Jimmie Burchard, President of the Sunrise Kiwanis, presented cash awards to the winning schools who participated in the St. Lucie County Fair 2014 School Display. The theme was “Locally Grown! Locally Sewn! A Community Stitched Together- What Makes St. Lucie County Special.” The winners in the middle school/ K-8 category were: First Place with $500 went to Palm Point Educational Research School, Second Place with $250 went to Forest Grove Middle School, and Third Place with $100 went to Allapattah Flats K-8. SLC 2025 High School Juried Art Exhibition

The St. Lucie County High School Juried Art Show is an annual celebration of young artistic talent, showcasing the creativity and skill of students from across the county. This year, FPC hosted the exhibition with the reception taking place on May 16th from 4-6 pm on the second floor of the district office. Viewing will continue during the work week until May 23rd. Skyping with Guest Readers at Savanna Ridge Elementary!

James Dean from Thinking Maps Skyped students in Mrs. de la Cruz Kindergarten class at Savanna Ridge Elementary and read the book, Tough Boris by Mem Fox.  Students in VPK through fifth grade enjoyed special guest readers from the community, district personnel and volunteers that came to read their favorite stories to students in classrooms.

Skilled Trades, Alive and Well at Treasure Coast High

Robotics, 3D Printing, Saws, Rulers, Measurement Calipers, CNC Machines, Drill Press, AutoCad Design, and Inventor Production, are all a buzz in Phil Depuy’s Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Lab at Treasure Coast High.  It’s a place for those who like to work with their hands, ‘tinker’, build and design. Students learn, practice skills and earn industry certification in MSSC, Inventor, and AutoCad. The program is a Preapprenticeship that leads into preferred admission into an Apprenticeship after high school graduation.

Skilled Trades, Alive and Well at Port St Lucie High

Step into Bruce Gardner’s Construction Trades classroom at Port St Lucie High School and you will see and hear the action.  Students learn, practice skills, and earn industry certification in Building Construction Trades.  Carpentry, Jobsite Safety, Tools and Equipment, Measurement, Residential Electrical, Aluminum Screening, Painting, Drywall Installation and Repair, Residential Plumbing, Residential HVAC, etc. The program is a Pre-apprenticeship that leads into preferred admission into an Apprenticeship after high school graduation.  

Skies Over Fort Pierce Central Saw Rockets Soar

Dr. Stan Forrester’s Honors Physics class made rockets fly! On a bright and sunny South Florida day, students gathered on the practice field, eagerly awaiting their turn to launch their creations. Though not likely found in standard outer space-going vessels, some students chose to adorn their rockets with embellishments. The sky wasn’t the limit for our rocket-building students! Sixth graders learn the art of debate through writing

Students in Michelle Mullins’ sixth-grade Language Arts class at Allapattah Flats K8 are learning how to utilize the writing process to write creatively, informatively and persuasively. As part of learning to write persuasively, students participated in a debate project in which they were grouped and asked to analyze a specific scenario and record the “pros” and “cons” of each. Some examples included consideration of a four-day school week or the positive and negative aspects of a school-enforced dress code. Sixth-Grade Fun at CAST While Setting Academic Goals

Students at CAST are gearing up for another amazing year in math. After completing PM1, students are looking ahead and setting their academic goals in math, ELA, Civics, and science. As part of their preparation, 6th-grade students in Ms. Wyatt’s math class enjoyed some friendly competition while writing and evaluating whole number exponents. Students took turns rolling two in one die to represent expressions in both exponential form and as repeated multiplication, before solving. The student with the higher product won the round. On Wednesday, November 18th at Lincoln Park Academy, we had the honor of congratulating six of our seniors.  These student athletes have committed to their college, university and/or academy to further their education with a scholarship. They are as follows:  Lindsey Wright – Swimming, Gardner-Webb University;  Derek Schwimer – Baseball, Palm Beach State College;  Ashley Langel – Softball, Shorter University;  Jeffrey Gerilca – Baseball, Air Force Academy Colorado Springs; Meghan Callahan – Softball, Palm Beach State College; and Taylor Boykin – Softball, University of South Carolina Beaufort.

Sirmons Speaks at PACE

At PACE Center for Girls, the Speakers Bureau’s first guest speaker of the year was Ms. Denise Sirmons, Treasure Hunter and Kids at Hope Coordinator. She captivated the students with her life story. Although she made several wrong choices as a youth, Ms. Sirmons eventually learned from her mistakes. The most important thing she learned in life was the importance  of surrounding herself with successful people, walking with integrity, and working hard.

Silver School Award 2013-14

St. Lucie Public Schools were recognized at the School Board Meeting on October 28th who achieved the Silver School Award for 2013-14. The Silver School Award is presented to recognize secondary schools that provide exemplary services to elementary and secondary schools that meet the following criteria: the sending school must have a school volunteer who provides coordination of the program, placement of students, orientation/training for the receiving staff, student/program evaluation, and student volunteer supervision; student volunteers and the receiving faculty must both receive orientation and training; the composite student volunteer hours must equal at least one half the total number … Read More

Silver Level Recognition for the Worksite Wellness Award

Tad Fisher of the Florida Tobacco Cessation Alliance presented St. Lucie Public Schools with the Silver Level Recognition for the Worksite Wellness Award for Comprehensive Tobacco Cessation Benefits. Stacy Jacobson, Wellness Manager and champion for healthy choices, submitted the application on behalf of SLPS. The award is based upon the Public Health Services Clinical Practice Guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence to effect cessation treatments.

Silly Science Candy Corn Experiments at Lawnwood

Students at Lawnwood Elementary conducted silly science experiments with candy corn! Classes used various liquids to predict and watch what happened. Students recorded their results and enjoyed their tasty treat afterward.

Sight Word Learning Fun

Mosaic Digital Academy students in kindergarten, first, and second grade are learning their sight words in fun and innovative ways! Students in Mrs. Lankow’s K-2nd grade are finding new and innovative ways to learn! Students create their sight words using homemade playdough, paint, alphabet letter blocks, clay, and Lego blocks! Students can use any type of material to build their sight words! Students love to create, innovate, learn, and grow!
