SLW Centennial Young Floridian candidates participated in a mock luncheon and interview in preparation for the official luncheon and interview at IRSC. Thank you to all of the guest judges who participated.
On Thursday afternoon, SLW Centennial High School welcomed representatives from St. Lucie County Upward Bound. The event was held during all lunches. A large number of students attended eager to learn about the program. They learned about the benefits of joining St. Lucie County Upward Bound, including access to college prep workshops, academic support, and unique opportunities designed to help students succeed. The event was a success, leaving students inspired and motivated to pursue their academic and career goals with the support of Upward Bound. This initiative promises to better prepare SLW Centennial High School students for their future educational endeavors.
Students were rewarded with a Fall Festival that included games, a dunk tank, sporting events, dancing, and other fun activities.

William Ortiz graduated in 2019 with a BA in History and International Affairs from Florida State University. He has just been nominated as an alternate for a Fulbright Teaching Assistant position in Columbia. In the summer of 2019, William was accepted into the Charles B. Rangel Summer Enrichment program as a 2019 “Rangel Scholar.” The Rangel Program is a joint program between the US Department of State and Howard University. More than 116 Health Science students at St. Lucie West Centennial High School learned Hands-Only CPR this week. These students were taught by Mary Higgins’ First Responder students. First Responder classes are available to students who have completed the Allied Health Program as a senior elective. First Responder students prepare for careers in emergency medicine by becoming CPR certified as Health Care Professionals, completing web based classroom instruction and skills in advanced first aid techniques, followed by a shadowing opportunity at various St. Lucie County Fire stations. Congratulations to all of the early childhood students who passed their 40-hour DCF statewide training course for all childcare workers in the Florida. Mrs. Wester and Mrs. Serynek took 60 students to IRSC on May 9 to take this test. As a result of passing this exam, students also have an opportunity to work with young children in the Eagles Nest Preschool on the campus of SLW Centennial High School. This is an excellent CTE program in our county providing great opportunities for our students.
On December 6, 2023, the Legal Eagles Club from SLW Centennial High School went on a tour of the United States District Court in Fort Pierce. Hosted by Judge Shaniek Maynard, the students went from Intake, to the holding cells, to the Grand Jury room, to the Courtroom, and heard from a variety of speakers, including: U.S. Marshals, a Federal Prosecutor, a Federal Civil Attorney, Federal Public Defenders, Probation Officers, Court Deputies, a Law Clerk, and Judge Maynard herself. SLW Centennial High School Criminal Justice Students in Ms. Baumgarten’s class visited the law library and courthouse in Fort Pierce. Students were given the opportunity to observe a Trespass and Resisting Arrest Trial. It was a great learning experience for the students.

Ms. Willems’ AICE Marine Science Students participated in “A Day in the Life of the Indian River Lagoon,” an annual citizen science and participatory project, where environmental partners, students, and teachers collaborate to simultaneously collect scientific data at sites along the 156 mile stretch of the lagoon.
St Lucie West Centennial High Culinary Arts students had their moment to shine at the 19th Annual Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association’s Competition. The pictures show the beautiful fruit carvings and culinary dishes Centennial’s Eagles prepared at the competition. Chef Calvin Lewis and Chef Christina Gedke-Balachak were very proud of their talented Eagles!
Thirteen Pre-K students at SLW Centennial High School celebrated a special milestone as they graduated and prepared to begin Kindergarten next year. The event was filled with smiles and excitement as the young graduates proudly stood in front of the crowd and showed their certificates. Families gathered to support and cheer for their children, capturing the moment with photos and applause. The ceremony marked the end of an important early learning chapter and the beginning of a new journey in the young students’ education.
