Thank you to our National Junior Honor Society and Yearbook members for bringing a little Halloween fun to our day! Members came to school early today to add some interactive sidewalk chalk fun to our hallways! It was great to see our students and adults doing hopscotch down the hallway and on their way to and from class!
In honor of National Women’s Physicians’ Day and Certified Nurses Day, St. Lucie West K-8 School’s Kindness Club, headed up by School Counselor Ava Pupuhi, delivered kindness flower baskets on Random Acts of Kindness Day to physicians and nurses at Tradition Hospital. Each student wrote a special thank you and decorated each heart-shaped note that was organized into a beautiful bouquet. Eighth graders from St. Lucie West K-8 recently visited St. Lucie West Centennial High School’s Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs. The students toured CTE program classrooms and lab space, interacted with teachers and students, and explored various programs. The students were excited about the CTE opportunities and eager to sign up for as many CTE programs as possible. Third-grade students in Ms. Paries’ class were fully immersed in a dynamic Fear Factor style test prep activity. They collaborated in teams to complete academic challenges! Their enthusiasm peaked as they completed each challenge with their teams. They eagerly reached into the mystery bags for surprise rewards. It was a joy to witness their enthusiasm and hard work throughout the activity!
Mrs. Schettini’s 3rd grade AMP (Advanced Math Placement) class is building a thinking classroom—and the energy is contagious! Students are given a challenge, randomly grouped, and encouraged to solve the problem using any strategy they choose. Students thrived through collaboration and sharing their thought processes with one another. Using voice and choice, they were able to use the strategy that truly worked best for them and share it with the group. Third grade students at St. Lucie West K8 enjoy super sweet learning in Mrs. Quiles’s Class! Topic 12 is all about graphs and data, and what better way to make it fun than with jellybeans? Students got hands-on with learning by collecting data from jellybeans (yum!), then used that information to create tally charts and scaled bar graphs. From determining appropriate scales to solving one- and two-step problems based on their graphs, our students are turning data into delicious discoveries! St. Lucie West K-8 students in Ms. Lynch’s 5th-grade math classes became city planners. Each student was assigned to build a city block by fulfilling one of the following buildings: restaurant, municipality, residential, shopping, and entertainment. The students made nets and then determined the volume of each building, decorated, and later confirmed each other’s recorded volume. The creative results were amazing to see. JAWSOME JOB, SHARKS!

Students compare various aspects of capitalism, socialism, and communism, allowing students to experience how different economic models function.

St. Lucie West K-8 students in Dr. Wardwell’s 8th grade Science classes had a “hair-raising” experience by learning all about electrostatic energy! They used the Van de Graaff generator which is an electrostatic generator that uses a moving belt to accumulate an electric charge on a hollow metal globe on the top of an insulated column, creating very high electric potentials. It produces a high voltage direct current (DC) electricity at low current levels. SUPER JAWSOME, SHARKS!
St. Lucie West K-8 Middle School students in Mrs. Eldridge’s Art classes learned all about Medieval Inspired Illuminated Letters. This art form uses different kinds of illuminated letters, including ornamented letters, historiated letters, and inhabited letters and were commonplace in Medieval manuscripts in Europe between the 4th and 16th centuries. Students captured the technique perfectly. BEAUTIFUL ART SHARKS!
SLWK8 third grade students investigate their very own community of St. Lucie County! Students from Mrs. D’Andrea’s Gifted Class had a chance to deep dive into the history of our community. Students picked a historical place in St. Lucie County to research ranging from the stunning Sunrise Theatre to the Roosvelt Bridge. Students then displayed information in a shoebox model. Students wrote their information along the outside on the box. Inside the box is a display of the historical place. Middle school students explored the Allied Health Certificate offered at many high schools. Students learned about different certificates and related careers and practiced related skills such as how to answer an office phone professionally, file reports, schedule appointments, take blood pressure, clean teeth as a dental hygienist, fill prescriptions like a pharmacy technician, and complete an evaluation as a physical therapist.
Dana Brightwell and Matthew Glotzer coached a brilliant group of students through this year’s Odyssey of the Mind competition at Suncoast High School. The SLWK8 Team chose to compete in Problem #5, “A Stellar Hangout”. Team members were Lilliana Boham, Nora Calnan, Jasmine Gabriel, Hannah Gaffney, Samantha Leonard, Jayden Nargen and Ivan Sheehan. They all worked diligently on the creative and technical portions of the problem, and demonstrated fortitude and perseverance throughout the many months of preparation.
Our JAWSOME third-grade students and teachers at St. Lucie West K-8 School participated in a drive-through wax museum where they depicted influential Americans. Students have been learning all about Americans that have made a significant impact in our country. Students then picked their own important American to research, wrote a biography, created a poster, and presented their chosen American to their classmates. Middle school STEM students in Mrs. Boham’s class showed off their sweet tooth design skills to create innovative candy bars. Working as cooperative groups they used pros & cons to pick the groups best idea to develop into a new product on the market.
