Culinary Arts students from Port St. Lucie High School, Northport K-8, and St. Lucie West Centennial High School hosted three booths at the annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Taste of St. Lucie fundraiser. Port St. Lucie High’s Jaguar Culinary Team sautéed and served Lucky 7 Wontons with Asian Slaw and Gator Loupgaroo with Boom-Boom Sauce. Delicious! St. Lucie West K-8 students served their homemade “Shark Bites” — a combination of dark chocolate cake, chocolate cream, dark chocolate, and whipped cream. Yummy! The Krawls establish collaboration and partnerships to enhance job opportunities and enrich classrooms with relevant industry needs. Along the way, they saw several St. Lucie Public Schools Culinary graduates working in the local restaurants. We are very poud of our culinary students!
Mrs. Jennifer Votino was selected from candidates across the nation to be a 2019 Carson Dellosa Brand Ambassador. Mrs. Votino teaches first and second grade math and science at Rivers Edge Elementary. As a brand ambassador, Mrs. Votino will be providing feedback on Carson Dellosa products used in the classroom. Each month she will receive products from Carson Dellosa to review. As a Brand Ambassador, she will also be given products to give away on her Facebook and Instagram pages.
St. Lucie County students rank number one in the nation for the Middle School Zero Robotics Challenge held on the International Space Station on Tuesday, August 13th. Two teams of students participated in the 5-week summer program held at Southern Oaks Middle School. Kevin McInerney and Brian Jones facilitated the teams to learn about and write programs that could control satellites in space. The participants competed with 26 other teams across the nation to win a technically challenging game by programming their strategies into a SPHERE satellite. St. Lucie West Centennial High School students from Mrs. Baumgarten and Mr. Nichol’s classes were introduced to a few local heroes. The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit came out to meet and speak with students about working in law enforcement. Students were well engaged and enjoyed observing the demonstrations provided by the unit. Mrs. Angela Baumgarten’s students were engaged and learned about skills, training, and career options for sUAS industry certification and the connection of drones to the field of law enforcement.
Forest Grove Middle School’s Resource Officer, Deputy Smith saw a need and quickly jumped in to help! When working with a student, she realized that the student who was recovering from a recent injury was having a difficult time walking to and from school. She reached out to the Community Liaison Department of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office for help. They were able to provide the student with a bicycle. St. Lucie County Schools hosted its annual Teacher Recruitment Fair on June 23, 2014 with over 150 applicants attending this event. School leaders from 16 schools interviewed prospective teachers in preparation for the coming school year which begins August 18, 2014. Recognizing that the greatest impact on student success is high quality instruction one of the District’s Strategic Goals is to recruit and retain effective teachers for all classrooms. As one of several recruitment strategies the Fair provided an opportunity to hire teachers before school starts. The St. Lucie County Reading Council invites parents and students to Bookfest – a March 5, 2016, literacy event hosted by C.A. Moore Elementary School in Fort Pierce. This free reading festival is scheduled from 10 AM to noon and is designed to provide attendees with a wide variety of literacy resources and information. Activities and resource stations include: Read to a VIP, Community Resource Information Station, Literacy Games and Prizes, Free Literacy Resource Center, Book Exchange, Mother Goose, and much more!
Fort Pierce Westwood’s Criminal Justice Academy was recognized by St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners during the county board meeting. Ms. Mildred Brown and St. Lucie Public Schools was recognized for the joint effort where students go to the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) as interns, guided class tours of the facility yearly, and guest speaker presentations. This partnership enables students to earn training hours towards their industry certification. Additionally, students completing the program and earning their 911 industry certification can apply for and become hired by St. Lucie County as Emergency Dispatchers.
The annual St. Lucie County High School Art Show opening is Friday, April 20th, from 5 to 8pm. This year’s show takes place in the Galleria of Pierce Harbor building at 100 S. 2nd St. in Ft. Pierce. An awards ceremony will take place at 7:15 after the closing of “Peoples’ Choice” voting. Students will be judged in 6 categories for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, plus a “Peoples’ Choice” award. The St. Lucie County Fire District brought firefighters and fire trucks to visit a class at Fort Pierce Central High School. The students spent the afternoon learning about fire safety, finding out what it takes to be a firefighter, and exploring a fire truck.
