The first morning of school was flawless and welcoming as community members, parents, grandparents, teachers and administrators welcomed students to a super successful new year at Northport K-8 School. The support the exceptional Title 1 school received was undeniable. SLPS Superintendent E. Wayne Gent was on hand as well as SLPS Chief Communications Officer Kerry Padrick. Also present were twenty or more veterans from the Northport Veteran Partners in Education program from local clubs including the Legion Riders, Korean War Chapter and Vietnam Veterans as well as the Marine Corps League. Northport Church Community Partners in Education, First United Methodist Church and First United Baptist Church had a combined group of at least fifteen people from both congregations to welcome and support the school and the children. Members of the school’s partnership with Step Up America were present as well. Step Up America partners with the school to teach citizenship and the safety and security of our country. PSL Police Chief, John Bolduc was present as well as a cadre of police officers from the department and several members of the local SLC Fire Department were on hand to welcome and show solidarity.
As a Title 1 school, Northport receives support from all avenues. All children at Northport receive 100% free breakfast and lunch. Our school staff is just so appreciative of the overwhelming show of support. We, as a school, understand that we can’t do this huge job of not only educating top notch students, but teaching service, love of country, empathy, good citizenship and sharing all the other qualities that it takes to make well rounded, highly educated and caring students. Northport is proud and thankful to be the recipient of all the assistance and support that our partners and community can offer!
