5th graders throughout St. Lucie County took a deep dive into science during “Saturday with a Scientist”. Five students from Mosaic Digital Academy were chosen to experience this unique opportunity hosted by IRSC at the Pruitt Campus. Topics explored were Geology, Ocean Acidification, and DNA extraction. During the Geology components, students compared features of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks and were able to identify meteors based on their magnetic qualities. Students conducted an experiment mimicking Ocean Acidification to examine the effects of how carbon dioxide impacts ocean pH levels having a negative impact on marine life. Finally, students extracted DNA from strawberries to investigate how it looks and feels and to understand how this information can be used to modify crops.
