Learning Happens Everywhere at Port St. Lucie High School

Mr. Adler’s class at Port St. Lucie High School enjoyed a fantastic, impromptu “field trip” right in our own parking lot today! This incredible opportunity arose when two kind members of the Waste Pro refuse collection crew stopped by and generously offered to demonstrate their equipment and share insights into their profession. We want to extend a huge thank you to the team for taking the time out of their busy schedule to connect with our students.

The demonstration of the large, green truck and its mechanical operations was, predictably, a major highlight. Students were fascinated by the hydraulic systems and the careful precision required to operate such heavy machinery safely. Beyond the cool equipment, the Waste Pro employees shared truly valuable information about the career path in sanitation. They spoke candidly about the importance of getting a good education, the commercial driver’s license (CDL) training required, and the specific certifications needed to succeed in this vital industry.

The students were fully engaged, asking thoughtful questions about everything from safety protocols to the daily routine of a collector. Their genuine appreciation for this real-world, hands-on lesson was clear. Experiences like this are priceless, helping our students see practical applications for their learning and recognize the many essential workers who keep our community running smoothly. Thank you again to Waste Pro for being such wonderful community partners!
