St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) and PNC Bank are united in a partnership to join with over 2 million others across the globe on October 19, 2017, to highlight the importance of literacy and Read for the Record. This is an annual campaign that includes classrooms, libraries, community centers, and homes in which children and adults read together in this worldwide shared reading experience to support children having the opportunity to enter kindergarten prepared to succeed.
According to Early Childhood Coordinator Dr. Mary Huffstetter, on Thursday, a cadre of PNC employees will join with SLPS staff to read to pre-kindergartners in classrooms across the district. “We’re going quackers over reading,” she says with a smile and then explains that this year’s Read for the Record book is Quackers, by Liz Wong. Children are sure to enjoy this endearing story of a kitten who grows up thinking that he is actually a duck until the day his world turns topsy-turvy when he meets another kitten. The story is about his path to understanding, acceptance, and learning that you can be who you want to be.
