FPC Students Unravel Strawberry DNA!

(Seniors Andrea Moreno & Tara Monfort)

Ms. Jackson’s scientists are unraveling the mysteries of DNA with fruit!  For all the emerging scientists, Ms. Jackson shares some background knowledge.  Each individual cell in an organism has a copy of the DNA pattern used to reproduce cells.  Usually, DNA is combined within the cell, so it cannot be seen or observed.  However, when a mixture of dish soap, salt, and strawberry pulp are combined, the strawberry cells are broken down into individual parts.  Then, alcohol is added to the pulp, encouraging the DNA strands to rise to the top and bind together.  Then a mystery unraveled at last–the cellular strand can be observed in one long, clear strand!
