Fort Pierce Central High School Students Explore Marine Science

Students from Fort Pierce Central High School recently embarked on an enriching field trip to the FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, where they explored the Indian River Lagoon through an immersive eco boat tour. This hands-on experience offered a unique opportunity to learn about one of Florida’s most diverse estuarine ecosystems and the cutting-edge research conducted at the institute.

Throughout the tour, students engaged deeply with the environment, asking thoughtful questions and showing genuine interest in the local wildlife and conservation efforts. They were introduced to a variety of scientific tools and techniques used to study the lagoon, including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), hydrophones, Secchi discs, and hydrometers. One of the highlights of the trip was the up-close exploration of native vegetation such as mangroves and seagrass species. Students also observed wildlife, including pelicans and sheepshead fish, while gaining insight into the ecology and conservation of manatees.

Beyond the scientific learning, students were encouraged to consider volunteer opportunities in the area, fostering a deeper connection to environmental stewardship and community involvement. This field trip was a meaningful experience that combined science, exploration, and civic engagement, leaving students inspired and eager for future educational adventures.
